I asked my dentist about this at my daughter's dental appt (when she was 3.5). The dentist said most people do grind their teeth as kids and it's totally normal. We all stop - then some of us start again in adolesence or adulthood. Nothing to worry about or do - he'll outgrow it.

Check with your child's dentist and see if a night guard might help, or if they just don't do that with kids. Not sure, but I don't think there is anything else you can do about it.

My little brother ground his teeth as a child and I remember in high school it was so loud I could hear it in the room across the hall at night! He stopped doing it as he got older.

But recently MY husband told me that *I* have been grinding my teeth at night!! (he even did sound effects for me- thanks hon!) I never did it as a kid though.

OHHHH my son is a grinder and a co sleeper! It makes me nuts! But unless you get them to the dentist and give a guard then there is nothing from my understanding ... interested to see if anyone has gone thru this before or is a pediatric dentist in thier spare time!

I have a five year old that does the same thing and it started out of nowhere...everything I have read on the internet has said that they will probaly grow out of it...a few suggestions that I have read are to have the child bite down and release a few times before bed. It did work but my kid chooses not to do it all the time. Another is to give plently of fluids throughout the day bc sometimes it has something to do with being dehydrated...hope it helps.

As a dental hygienist this is a common question from parents. Dentist's don't usually recommend a bite guard for kids. When teeth start coming in and falling out they typically stop grinding. Lot's of suspicions as to cause but no definitive reason. When all the adult teeth are in and if they are still grinding that is when you'll want to talk to your dentist about a night guard. The permanent teeth will be effected by grinding over time. Good Luck!
