Teenage Bed Wetting.

My teenager started wetting the bed when they were 6 years old. That is right around the time they figured out my husband was not their father. I always told my child that they had another dad, and he lived across the country, So I always thought it was becuase of the emtional issues. The Bio-dad has visited with him maybe 12 days in the last 13 yrs. My husband and my child have a great relationship. Do things together, offer gifts the other might like for birthdays or Chirstmas.

We have gone to the doctor for the issue. They offer nose spray, meds with no success. One med actually made my child crawl into a ball (fetal postion) rocking back in forth staring at the wall in their room. Pharmacy and on call doctor stated that med had a "black box" that a low percentage of people can have effects from that med. So we are very scared to try anymore meds.
My child always has been a DEEP sleeper. So when we tried waking my child up in the middle of the night, they were not actually fully awake.
Anyone have any similar experiances, and any advice?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Sorry forgot to mention that yes we took my child to a counselor. They stated that my child was a well rounded young person. Suggested it was a sleep issue as well. I may just have to suggest the sleep apnea issue. I would seriously hate for my child to have this issue till they were 17 or 18. They all ready have a social issue of not staying nights at friends houses.

My brother and I both started bed wetting after having a few years of 'dry' nights. As far as I know it was never linked to anything emotional - I didn't stop until I was 17 or 18.

I too was dragged to doctors and tried everything - withholding drinks after 6p, stopping caffeine, nothing worked. I think for some of us, it's just a slow development of that control mechanism.

Now, my son's bedwetting has improved since he had his tonsils out. Since neither my brother or I had our tonsils out I wonder if we too were suffering from sleep apnea and were just sleeping too soundly to wake up until we grew into our tonsils.

The doctor says he never makes the claim that it will help but he has heard often of improvement in bedwetting when children get their tonsils out.

We used the medication DDAVP. It finally was the only thing that worked.

Yes. My husbands adopted son is almost 16 and still wets his bed. We've tried everything and keep telling him he'll grow out of it when he's ready. We try not to make it a big deal and it's hidden well from his siblings.

Bed wetting is also linked to sleep disorder.

I was a bedwetter up till college, and to be honest, I'm 30 and still sometimes have "accidents." (thankfully I usually wake up before anything messy!) My problem is also heavy sleeping. I actually trained myself to dream about having to go to the bathroom in my dream. If I actually start to feel relief, I know I need to wake up. I'll dream about going all over to find a bathroom, then start peeing in a washing machine or something out of desperation and will wake up. I'm not sure if that's something someone else can do.

I also dont drink anything after 5:30 at night, except small sips if I'm really thirsty. Good luck!

Have you taken him to a counselor? I know that teenage bedwetting is linked to ADD/ADHD is that a possibility? ADD/ADHD starts to come out when children are around 6 years old....I would seek counseling to find out whats going on.

What does the doctor say? I'd start there. Good luck.
