Tampons After Baby

Updated on August 29, 2010

I had my daughter 6 months ago, since then I have had 2 periods. Both periods tampons were very uncomfortable. They went in fine but were not comfortable while in. I tried different brands and nothing worked. Is this normal?

What can I do next?

I have not been able to use them since having my daughter almost 10 years ago. They are uncomfortable and make me cramp more. They are not worth the pain.

That was normal for me. After my 2nd baby, I absolutely couldn't wear tampons anymore. But after having baby #3, they worked again! I think things must "move" a bit when we have a baby. But don't give up hope! Just have another baby. :) (kidding!)

It is "normal" to a certain extent, but it never hurts to talk to your doctor about things either. I had this same problem after my first... I also had a rough recovery b/c of some extensive tearing during delivery. The scar tissue can get irritated by a tampon and the friction it can cause when moving around. I found that using a little KY to insert tampons was helpful, buying round-tipped plastic-type applicators and also using the smallest size possible as well. The things us women go through huh? lol! When convenience allows, wear pads at home or at night etc to help keep irritation to a minimum... and know that it does get better. Some of us ladies just take a little longer for our bodies to get back to a more "normal" state.

You should not feel them at all. I would speak to your doctor about this to see if he can help you find the problem. I personally hate pads, and went back to tampons as soon as the doctor said ok after both my births, and had no problems with them. At 6 months, if you are having trouble something could be wrong.

I agree with mentioning it to the doctor. It takes a full year for everything to be completely back to normal after a baby, but it seems like 6 months should be plenty of time for them to comfortable. I never had any discomfort and was using them at about 2 1/2 months (and I never thought things were going to go back the way they were supposed to!).

I have had conversations about this with a couple of my girlfriends and we feel the same way unfortunately even 3-4 years after having children. It seems like sometimes it just depends on the day but it is definetely alot different and not as comfortable.

I think it depends on what you mean by "uncomfortable"?
Do they feel like they're falling out? Painful?

I had no issues, but I would think that by this point, it shouldn't be a problem.
Maybe a visit back to the OB?

It should be ok ,they say not to use until you have had your 6 wk check up. Maybe speak to your doctor

When I was younger, the thought of using a pad was disgusting. Now I'm older and have had a few babies, the thought of using a tampon is just plain icky.

I am kind of with Theresa. I always used tampons until having children as I was an athlete, and it was more comfortable. They're not as comfortable to me anymore either, probably because our musculature is so different post-baby.

Regardless, it's worth a call to the OB/GYN - chances are, they've heard that question 1000s of times and wouldn't blink an eye at providing a good answer.

If you're not doing kegel exercies, you may want to start - two kids, and a simple sneeze can be catastrophic on the bladder these days.

I've had the same experience. I gave birth 6 months ago and tampons are now uncomfortable and slip out of place. I sincerely hope this resolves itself.

It took me years after both my kids to be able to wear them again. There's nothing like walking along and feeling your tampon inching its way out with every step!

I'm glad too that you asked this! I've had a few cycles since my second (now 7 months) was born. For the first two, I felt the same way with tampons. They got better each month though, and now I don't feel them while in, but removing them sometimes makes me want to cry. I resorted to pads for a couple of months, and now I use tampons at the beginning of my cycle, but once the flow is light, I have to go back to pads. I hope that changes with time! I could never use Tampax- I always felt them in. I use Playtex which were fine for me before babies, so I'm hoping they'll be good again someday!

I think it just takes your body a while to settle back to normal. My daughter just turned one and tampons are just now getting comfortable again. Try useing the lowest absorbancy and changing more often, otherwise you need to listen to your body and give it some more time.

After having a few I've experienced the same, and unfortunately for me it seems that no matter the number of kegels I do they still just don't feel right. My only problem came with athletics (specifically triathlon) that a pad just doesn't work for. I started using a product called Instead, and I love it! Wish I would have known about it from the beginning! SO much better than tampons, and no worry of toxic shock syndrome either (10yrs of the product, not a single report). TSS doesn't happen all that often, but after having watched someone I know go through it, it is a horrifically scary thing!

I'm interested in the responses you get too!! Because after my first son I had 3 periods at about a yr after having him (before getting preggo w/ #2) and I tried tampons too and the were horribly uncomfortable. I tried all kinds as well. It felt like it was falling out and all scrunched up sorry if that's TMI..Is that what you are feeling too? I haven't tried since because I'm still BF my second, but am curious to know if I will have the same problem again. I know things change but I had no clue it would change that much, and didn't even to think to ask my OB. Keep us updated, just wanted to let you know you are not alone with this one..

BTW Just curious though did you also BF? Maybe its a hormone issue, or maybe it has something to do with a difficult delivery?
