I like Kellhy's answer! Now for me! Go to the Airport! They have valet parking, your 8 yr. old will LOVE it! You can walk through the place, he can watch the planes take off & land, there are MANY places to sit down should your mom need to do so. Make your way to the restaurant there, the big one, can't think of the name but it is a revolving one, good food & a treat for all three of you!
ooh go to treasure island to the pier. You can get something to eat and watch the porpouses swim in the water. Also there are a bunch of gift shops etc.
A better place to go is Weeki Wachee to see the manatees. Try www.riversafaris.com they have tours you can take that are very nice. You could also go to Weeki Wachee Spring Park i think it is called it is in Homasasa on 19.
There is a St. Petersburg Pier that has lots of shops, a mini aquarium and dolphin sight seeing at the early morning... not sure of a Treasure Island Pier tho... we also have the Dali Museum in St.Pete. If your Mom can't walk much adn you don't have a wheelchair or rollerchair - you'll be up the creek because almost everything requires a medium amount of walking. I'm more familiar with St. Pete as FC_ is familiar with Tampa.
