I need some help. My oldest child has the flu. All 3 kids of my kids had their flu shots 2 weeks ago. (I know they can still get it.)
Anyway, the doctor wrote everyone in the family prescriptions for the tamiflu. All 3 of my kids(3,5,6 years old) all takes a 1 tsp and and a half. My oldest(the sick one) has to take hers 2x a day for 5 days and the 2 younger ones has to take theirs 1x a day for 10 days. The girls has no problems taking it. The 3 year old is another story. This made the 3rd day of taking this. The first day he spit some of it up. The second day we got what we could get in him and he threw it up. Tonight i mix it in a cup without him seening me and mix it with some juice. Nope didn't work. He spit some out. He's usually a good child taking his medicine. He takes his multivitamin, allergy medicine and if needed tylenol or motrin without any problems. I'm guessing this medicine isn't the greatest. I'm guessing i can go to the pharmacy and see if they can flavor it?? I kinda worried he isn't getting most of it in and worried about him coming down with the flu also?? The good news is the oldest(the sick one) is ALOT better. She been fever free for almost 24 hours. I'm totally clueless about all this. This is the FIRST time any of my kids came down with the flu. So of course i don't know what to do? Keep forcing this medicine in him? Get it flavor and see if he takes it? Call the dr? Anyone had a similiar problem to this with getting a child to take his or hers medicine? Need some help!!! :P
Thanks!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks yall....the only crazy thing is the 3 year old(my son) had 101 fever earlier this afternoon(11/5).Now he's running around feeling better. The pharmacy said they couldn't flavor it(guess because its been open and taken out of the store.) I guess i'll wait and see what his fever does between now and in the morning and call the doctor and see what she wants to do. Thanks again!!

My daughter had h1n1 a few years ago and we tried it. It basically is supposed to shorten the span of the illness and lessen the symptoms. It actually made my daughter much worse. It affects people differently. It's not a necessary medicine so I would advise you to not push it. It might do more harm than good.

Two different years I've had influenza and my daughter never got it. The first time, I took Tamiflu and the second time, I didn't.

Tamiflu does not prevent the flu, it only helps a person get over it a day or so sooner. Our doctor said she does NOT prescribe Tamiflu as a preventative, so my daughter did not take it. We didn't' take any special precautions for her not to get my flu.

In light of my experience, I would not force the 3 year-old to take this medicine.

Here's some info about Tamiflu use in children: http://www.tamiflu.com/hcp/prescribing/hcp_prescribe_chil...
The graph shows that the untreated children got the flu about 17% of the time, those who took the medicine got the flu about 4% of the time.

The daughter who has the flu and is taking the Tamiflu is reducing her chances of passing on the flu to your youngest, also, according to this information.

I don't know about children - I only know about Tamiflu for adults. It really helped my husband. However, the other ladies are right about it depending on the person. Sounds like your 3 year old doesn't handle it well. I'm sorry about that - I hope that she doesn't come down with the flu.

Good luck!!

I would not force it. I bet if he gets the flu you will never have to force med again.

We just went through this last spring. The only way I could get my child to take his Tamiflu was to mix it with some concentrated red Kool-Aid or fruit punch and serve it ice cold. I also bribed him by allowing a small piece of candy after each dose. Good luck!

Tamiflu isnt actually medicine it just lessens the symptoms and the time you have it ,or so they say . Don't force it . My kids were on it a few years ago when they had h1n1.They weren't giving it to older kids because they could have severe behavioral changes .
So, don't force it and just let him get better on his own . It is a virus so only time will help . Hang in there you are doing a great job !
