Taller than Her Older Sister.

Well, it happened. Our 11 year-old daughter is now taller than our 16 year-old daughter, and stronger, too! 16 year-old is five foot even and her little sister is a couple inches taller. We suspected this might happen, since the older one has always been a petite little thing and the youger one has always been big for her age. We just didn't expect it to happen so soon. This hasn't caused any problems - they've always been close sisters and they get along beautifully (though the younger one is definitely the more aggressive, "in charge" one, giving her "big" sister piggyback rides, etc, and we suspect by the time she's done growing, she'll be significantly taller) And we treat them according to their ages.

I was just curious, though - at what ages did your younger children pass up their older siblings in height/size?

What can I do next?

My boys are 18 months apart. At age 10 my youngest passed up his 12 year old brother. He's now 11 and 3 inches taller than his 12.5 year old brother.

My almost 5 year old should be passing my 7 1/2 year very soon - probably before he starts kindergarten.

My little guy happens to be fairly big for his age, and one of my nieces is the smallest in her class. I'll never forget the day came came to my crying. I thought, oh know, what did my kid do to you (I was thinking my oldest had hit her or kicked her or something). She told my that my oldest had informed her that my youngest was bigger than her. I thought, "Oh sweetie, he's been bigger than you for a couple of years. Didn't you notice?" I just hugged her and reminded her that she's still older. That made her feel a little bit better.

Interesting, your last question has now had the subject been deleted since Julie S pointed out the gender differences in the 2 posts.

Hmmmmmm.

Odd, your last question it was a brother she was carrying around and humiliating. I can't remember the age you ascribed to that child.

Are you a troll? Are you collecting data trying to find out if this is read differently if it is a girl she is bullying instead of a boy? Are you just strange and impressed that you have this really tall child so you are letting her get by with however she wants to treat people?

Siblings passing each other tends not to happen beyond genders. So just this year my 14 year old son passed my 23 year old daughter, whatever, he just happened to hit 5'8 which is where my girls max out.

Are you really short?

This is a totally odd question in light of your last question.

I really don't think it matters.
I'm the younger sibling and I have always been taller than my older sibling.
I am also taller than my Mom.
No biggie.

My daughter who is 11, is already 5' tall, since this past summer. And she's hitting a growth spurt now.
So is MANY of her classmates and in her grade level, the kids as a whole, are just a bunch of TALL kids. Many even taller than my daughter.

My eight year old son is now about 2 inches taller and 10 lbs heavier than his eleven year old brother. They had been about the same size from the time they were four and seven.

My sister was 5 years older, but at some time (I don't know when), I passed her... she is about 5'4" and I am about 5'7" .....

Also, my older two were like that.... first was petite, and the second was much bigger!

They were only 20 months apart, and probably by the time the oldest was 5 or so, "little" sister was catching up with her!

My little sis and I were the same size when I was in 3rd grade and she was in Kindergarten. She was bigger than me the next year.

My 3 year old boy and 5 year old boy are practically the same size. Maybe 1" and 2lbs difference. They'll probably be the same size by winter. They were the exact same size at birth.

My younger son passed his older brother somewhere around 11-12. He is 6'4" now and my older son is about 5'10." They are three years apart.

My ped predicted this would happen when my younger son was a baby. Something about the bone length in his leg.

It's tough at times because people constantly comment on younger son's height. "Oh my gosh how tall ARE you?" But they both handle it well, and younger son says that he still feels like the "little" brother.

I would just celebrate the unique traits of each of them.

FWIW I'm the oldest and I'm much shorter than my youngest sister. Never bothered me.

I think it could be possible my younger daughter (6) will be taller than my older (8.5). She is 2 and half years younger but only one shoe size smaller. I reached basically my full height maybe minus and inch in 5th grade. I remember having to "trace" our shoe on a piece of paper and mine didn't fit on a standard piece! My brother was 2 years older and about up to my shoulders. ouch! We had 5 kids and I was second. I remember going to a picture studio with all the siblings and the photographer asking my mom who was taller me or my older brother. She told him he was so of course you can't see it in the picture but he is standing on about 10 inches of blocks so he is taller than me. It happens. Now as adults my middle sister is about 2 inches taller than me and my baby sister about an inch taller but I tease her that she really isn't. So I guess at 5'9" I am the shorty of the family!

Interesting. In your last post, which you erased, you asked about a daughter mistreating a son who was smaller tho older. Did you get that situation resolved.

My 16 yo recently topped his older (19) brother's height, my oldest is 5'2" and his brother is now 5'8". I was taller than my sister (who is 10 years older than me) by the 7th grade, when I had a bizarre growth spurt of 6 inches in 9 months. She's 5'3" and I'm 5'7".

I have 3 girls, 2 years apart. My middle daughter was almost her "big" sister's height since 2 or 3--always just 1" or 2" shorter & passed her up when she was in 3rd grade. She passed me up when she was in 5th grade. I am 5'7". Well, I think I might be shrinking a little bit. So she was 10 or 11. Now I'm the shortest one in the family, the oldest is 17 & 5'8", middle is 15 & 6', & youngest is 12 & almost 5'8". I don't know if any of them are done growing or not. They sure eat like they aren't!

I will say that since middle was always almost as tall as her "big" sister, we have talked about genetics, hereditary traits, etc all of their lives because she went through a lot of bad feelings of being "a freak of nature" as she put it. She was also pretty chubby til about a year ago, so she would cry about that when we went to buy clothes, all the cute pre-teen & teen clothes were too small & WAY too short for her. Both my husband's & my families are ALL tall--ironically, I am the shortest in my family & my husband is the shortest male in his--he is 6'5", btw!

The girls have always dealt pretty well with the tallness thing, with a lot of jokes about "big" sister, "little" sister, etc...although I have often wondered if they would of had such good humor about it if they had been boys.

This is happening to my girls as I type this! :) My 10 yr. old is taller than any other girl (and all but one boy) in her class. My 14 yr. old is a little short for her age, but not by too much. She's also the youngest in her classes in 9th grade, so it's on her mind often. My 10 yr. old is almost as tall as I am, and I'm 5'7ish. Many people think my girls are twins. My oldest one takes it in "stride" (pun intended), but there are times she's a little grumpy about it or she gives the younger one a hard time, calling her a "freaking giant" and such... it's all in fun and so far, no hard feelings! :)

That's around the age that my sister passed me in height and I am four years older. She was never more than a couple of inches shorter when we were growing up and she always weighed more. As adults, she is about three inches taller. Since most kids don't grow much more after about age 16 - 18, but they start having huge growth spurts around 11 - 13, I'm not too surprised that this happened in your house when it did. Sounds like they are fine with it though and nothing to worry about.

I don't think my daughter will ever be taller than her older brother.

My niece(s) on the other hand......

One is 10, the other is 7. The 10 year old has the misfortune of having the crappy genetics. The 7 year old is about the same size as her older sister.

I don't remember the medical term, but the 10 year old's body thinks she's 8, not 10. So, they're hoping she'll still grow, just at a delayed time frame from kids her own age.
