Taking Progesterone for Pregnancy While Nursing

Hello
I actually have already gotten some really great info from several lactation consultants on my question, but I figured that it can't hurt to see if there are any mamas out there that have been in my situation.

I am currently nursing my 11 month old baby (at least 4 times a day and at night) and I found out that I am 5 weeks pregnant. My Dr wants me to go on progesterone b/c I do have a history of mc and I was also on progesterone with my daughter. They are supportive of my desire to continue to nurse my 11 month old.

So, are there any mamas out there that have taking progesterone for a pregnancy while they were still nursing their older baby?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

I took progesterone from weeks 5-14 since my body was so low with my daughter. After giving birth I started on bio-identical progesterone and have been on it ever since. My daughter is now 2 1/2. I did not get pregnant again, but it has helped me in so many ways. Check out the info that Karen sent about Dr. Lee...it's very good. I nursed my daughter until she was 25 months old. Your progesterone is taken over by the placenta at 14 wks...I just can't make enough naturally. I will probably be on bio-indentical for the rest of my life, but it helps and it's easy with the cream. I would recommend Emerita brand if you are going with the cream. It is free of everything so it is safe to be taking while nursing. I've got a $5 discount at iherb.com too if you wanted to try it from there (cheapest price I found). Though I started by getting mine from fruitful yield. Congrats on both of your babies! That's great news. :) :)

I would imagine it must be OK because the birth control pills that are safe while breastfeeding contain Progestin (synthetic Progesterone). I've heard some people experience a drop in supply, but I otherwise my understanding is that it is safe.

I also took progesterone while pregnant and nursing. My little boy was about 14 months old when I got pregnant with number 2 and I had to take progesterone. I was only breastfeeding at that point twice a day, and I continued to breastfeed until I was three months pregnant. I stopped tehn because he was losing interest. Now my number 2 is 14 months! Time flies! But I had no problems with the progesterone. BTW I was taking a pill form of it. Good Luck!

Good for you for asking and yes, with all natural, bio-identical progesterone, you can do it. I have a lot of information and many testimonials about this product. Many women have saved their pregnancies because of it and has changed their lives! Give me your email address and I'll be happy to send some information to you. Plus Dr. John Lee was a pioneer in this area and you can find information that he has done on hormone balancing at www.drjohnlee.com. I look forward to helping you out and congratulations to you as well!

I did a natural progesterone cream b/c I both miscarried and then delivered a premeeie while nursing...I did a bunch of research and opted to stop nursing at 22 weeks due to a change in the way that the uterus can be affected by nursing with my next baby. If I were you I might try to cut back a little on the nursing (like down to morning and night) at least for the first trimester...these are just some thoughts, feel free to email me if you want all the details! But YES I have often used a natural progesterone cream while nursing!

Hi M.,
I also had a mc with our first. I was low on progesterone with Sarah, number 2, and the suppositories did the trick to get me past the first 14 weeks. Your bady sloughs off the extra hormone and it does not feel any different. All good.

Good luck with number 2.
