Taking Bottle Away

I need help! My 19 month old is still drinking out of a bottle. I've tried giving him is milk in a sippy cup a few times before. But he just cries, refuses to drink it, goes on a hunger strike, etc. So, I figured he wasn't ready. But, now he can hold a cup and drink just fine by himself. He'll drink anything but milk out of a cup or sippy cup. Yesterday morning I decided it was time to take the bottle away. I bought him some thomas tank engine sippy cups (he loves trains) and he was really excited at first, but as soon as he realized it was milk in there...he got MAD. He hasn't had any milk since. Seven missed "feedings" and counting. What do I do? I need some encouragement.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for your responses. Its only been three days but he shows no signs of drinking milk. He gives me this disgusted look when he gets a sip of it, so maybe he doesn't actually like the taste of milk. BTW, I've tried every kind of cup, straw concoction that there is.

Thank you for reminding me that other foods have calcium (duh to me!) Last night before bed and again this a.m. he ate a whole container of yoplait yogart. I was thrilled! I think we'll focus on getting more food in him now and water and some juice. Thanks so much again.

He will go on a 'strike' to get you to relent. Be consistent. Keep offering the sippy cup with milk. Also offer yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese, etc.

My daughter did the same thing. We were consistent and eventually she gave in and began drinking milk out of the cup more. It took a month! We tried all sorts of cups too. To this day, she doesn't drink much milk, but prefers yogurt and cheese over milk. We also have her take multivitamin liquid daily.

It took about a month to get her to begin drinking more milk! But it varies - most I heard was it took several weeks or just 2 weeks. Each child is different. But in the end, it won't affect them developmentally or physically, and they will never 'starve' themselves.

Don't fret; lots of kids do this. It's not the end of the world -- he will eventually drink it and in the meantime try other methods of calcium intake. Milk is not 'all that,' there are other equally healthy ways to get calcium in the foods mentioned above.

Cold turkey is hard, for mom as well as the child, but in due time he will come around. We all have been there. :o) Congrads on stopping the bottle!

A.:

you indicate that he will drink other liquids from a cup... so let of of the milk.

I have written elsewhere on this list about cows milk.. your son needs fluid for hydration and food for nutrition...

My son is 26 months and is STILL on strike since 13 months! I was sooo worried that he wouldn't grow without milk. He eats plenty of cheese and I give him supplements, etc. He's fine! He's very tall for his age and if he didn't get enough calcium he wouldn't be growing nearly as fast so I know he's getting plenty from food. Milk is very overrated. Give him a balanced diet and someday he'll come around-maybe. Personally, I still won't drink milk because it reminds me of how my parents forced me to as a kid. Bad memories-you don't want to do that. We can talk more about other food options if you want. Remember, at this age, they only need about 800mg calcium.
Stay strong and calm!

Have you tried the kid cups with straw you can get at a restuarant? Our guy thinks it's "cool" that he can drink from a big boy cup and doesn't care what's in it.

Good luck!
