Tag Reading System

I got my daughter the Tag Junior when she was either 2 or 3 (forget which) and she used to love it. She would take it to daycare and "read" to the ladies when they were fussy. Then two years ago, we got her the Tag Reader. It works on the Junior books too, as well as other activities. She LOVES it. Of course, she has always loved reading and learning and being read to. She'll be 6 in two weeks and is in K. It definately helps keep her interested and allows her to read some on her own even if she doesn't know the words on her own. It keeps her engaged.

Her friend's mom got one for her friend last year who was in K and was struggling with reading and didn't really like reading. I haven't heard any complaints.

There are even more books for it now, including learning to read books (other than the story books). I am sure it would at least enhance what her teacher is doing in class.

No clue if it will help with reading. The most important thing is reading to them.

My four year old likes it. He has some sight words and is just beginning to start working on reading. I feel like it works on reading comprehension more that teaching reading. There is a collection of books that focuses on the long and short vowel sounds etc. that may be helpful. I think anything to get them excited about a book is great. He definitely learns the most when I am reading with him though.

It's a fun toy, and for that reason it's not a bad gift idea, but I'm not sure it helps all that much with reading. If he needs reading help, I would recommend using the great games and activities on www.starfall.com and/or buying him some BOB books. I taught both my sons to read using those resources. We also have a TAG, but they use it more like a toy (which is fine, but might not be what you are looking for).

I liked it to a point. Keep in mind that the memory on them is very small. I think that you can put about 10 books on it before it runs out of memory...
