Hi Moms---My 13 year old son started Taekwondo 2 months ago and loves it!! Yeah! Yesterday, he got kicked in the hand during and was no big deal, just hurt alot. Feels fine today. My question is have any of your kids been seriously hurt with Karate or Taekwondo. As you can probably tell, I worry a bit---tying to stop that.

My son was hurt at the studio, but not actually doing the martial arts. They mopped the mats before his class and didn't not dry it thoroughly. Running laps he slipped and fell into the mirror - had to get stitches.

Both my boys have done martial arts and the older even did MMA for a time. No real injuries for either due to the sport. In any sport there are injuries. My daughter ran Cross Country and I think I saw more kids injured running than in any sport my kids have participated in.

Relax - let him enjoy being active. It is good for him.

It happens.. My daughter is a black belt in Tang Soo Do and she had a lot of strains, aches, etc... no broken bones, etc.

The martial arts was a lot easier for me to deal with than her current cheerleading. She's been cheering since age 12 and she is now 16 and no matter how good she is, I cringe every time I see her being thrown up in the air or doing back flips. We've seen orthopedic specialists for wrist and knee injuries due to cheer. So far, nothing serious, thank Goodness

My Daughter takes Karate and is a blue belt.

Yes, she gets injured, or muscle strains or aches.
It is par for the course.
She's never gotten any serious injuries though.
They do wear protective gear when they do matches. And they are taught about safety.

My daughter is a trooper and is fine with it.
She will tell us when something hurts, then we check it. It is usually nothing and just aches.

My Husband takes marital arts too. And he gets aches/bruises etc.

My 11 year old has been in TKD for 5 years now and the only injuries he's had is 1 pulled muscle in his leg. It is highly regulated. I guess he COULD get hurt, but he could get hurt doing about anything. Don't worry, TKD has awesome instructors and they watch the kids like hawks.

My son's had a minor twisted ankle from landing from a kick once.
(He's a 2nd Don blackbelt and has been involved with taekwondo for 4 years).
Another time a finger got slightly sprained during a sparring match.
So far he's had no injury that a bit neoprene wrapping or ace bandage can't handle.
The people who tend to get more injured are the adults (parents who take it up when their kids take it).
Knees, ankles and shoulders of the adults just don't hold up like the kids do.
Of course the Masters/instructors rarely are injured - they've been doing this stuff/teaching for years.

I am a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Competed competitively and was even on the Jr Olympics team as a child and won silver at Nationals in fighting. Though, I have seen a shoulder get pulled out of socket during practice and some broken noses... that was mighty ugly!

The biggest injury I ever had was a pulled muscles, bruises, very sore nose from getting kicked straight in the face... really it's much safer than cheerleading in which I sustained back injuries, rolled ankles, sprained wrists.... and my husband broke his femur in soccer!

My 14 year old just got his black belt in karate . . . over the last 6 years we have had numerous minor injuries.

The training was so tough for black belt that he was constantly getting bloody noses. He also got kicked in the nose a couple of times.

We never had to go to the doctor over the injuries (jammed finger, bloody noses, strained muscles). We felt the benefits outweighed the risk. He went from a very sickly, weak kid to a six foot tall wunderkind who can run two miles in about 14.5 minutes (there are other things besides karate in this evolution too).

The day he walked across that stage to receive his black belt was one of the proudest moments of my (and more importantly, his) life. If you've ever seen the movie Rudy - that was my son (except he's taller and it was karate, not football). He did it by sheer heart, and will. I will never, never forget it.

Good luck - I really hope your son enjoys it and benefits greatly from martial arts.
