Tablets for My Kids? Which One?

My 3 kids, ages 4, 7, and 10 - are asking for tablets as their Christmas gifts... I have an original Kindle Fire, but I only use it for Internet and reading - I'm sure they'll be watching movies and playing games as well. We're looking at leap pad, kindle fire hd, and nook hd... any tips or advice?

What can I do next?

I have a Nook tablet and I love it. My daughter is also asking for an e-reader for her birthday, so I've been researching and I think I'm going to go with the Kindle Fire HD 8.9". It's a bit more expensive than the 7", but it has 4G so she won't need access to WiFi to get online. But ...she is also 17. If she were younger I would probably NOT want her to have that online access unless I was around to monitor. I also like that Amazon has a lending library for Amazon Prime members, and as much as I love my Nook, Amazon's selection of books is better than Barnes and Noble.

Four year old is too young. There are so many other things he should be doing. There is plenty of time for tablets. Even the seven year old is young. Guess I am an o,d fashioned kind of girl. Kids should be outside,
Or doing things with their hands building, creating etc.

I would go for the least expensive, because evn a 10 year old is not that responsible.

i agree that they are too young to each have one. what will you get them next year? their own cars?

why not get one for them to share? each kid can use it at a certain time of the week. then you can see how well they do with expensive electronic equipment and the responsibility that comes with its use. if they really want it, they'll make it work. then maybe get the 10 yr old his/her own tablet in the future. it could be like a coming-of-age gift.

good luck!

I'd go with the Kindle Fire. Make sure you get sturdy cases for all of them....and the warranty.

Also, be sure you use the parental settings!

We got Google tablets for the kids from Staples. They are over a year old and doing well. The kids love Kid's Place because they can go on there and play any number of games that we've downloaded, it's all pre-approved by us.

They cannot go and download more stuff or go on the internet. It's a secure place that the parents manage for the child.

The parents have no worries because it takes a password to get out of Kid's Place.

My boys recently bought with their own money a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 at Best Buy for $179. After a lot of research I liked those the best for many reasons but also because they had camera's for both sides so they could take pictures and videos as well as Skype their dad when they felt like it. I think it is the only tablet in this price range that has 2 cameras. Most just have the one to skype with.

I don't think the Leap Pad does all of that so it would be down to the other two and that's just personal preference and cost.

Maybe give the 4 year old your old Kindle Fire and upgrade to an iPad for yourself ;)

The Kindle Fire HD is going to be able to do everything you can do with your Kindle Fire as well as games and movies. It's much better. It's also much cheaper than an IPad. (Only $199 for the 7 inch and $269 for the larger one.) I have a Nook Tablet, which is also an older model. The latest model is the Nook HD, and this is much cheaper than the Kindle Fire ($129 for the 7 inch & $149 for the larger one.)

I love my Nook Tablet. I also have an IPad, and the web browsing is easier. That might not be a factor in the Nook HD. If you're curious, I'd go to a Barnes and Noble and play with one. They also sell them at Target. To look at a Kindle Fire HD, you could go to a Best Buy or an Office Depot. Since you already own a Kindle Fire, it might be woth at least looking at the latest version.

These are all good tablets. You just have to weigh the look at the cost and decide whether or not the ore expensive model is woth it to you.

I really like Reva's suggestion of getting ONE tablet for the three children to use. This would both limit time AND keep the family together (three tablets may equal three disengaged kiddos). You would need to figure out how homework research would trump entertainment in usage, but otherwise, this would help you monitor how/how much they are using it.

I will say that when I see the middle-schoolers at my son's school ( it's k-8) with tablets, they can still be a bit careless with them. You should plan on having some clear rules around usage, including time allowed/ where it might be used, and when the computer MUST be off. (mealtimes, by a certain time in the evening, not while company is visiting, etc.)

I saw a commercial for the kindle fire HD that lets you set an amount of time they get to play on their tablet and then it shuts down. I thought that was pretty cool.

For me, I got my 7 and 5 year olds ipod touches last year. Mostly because we have iproducts in our house and they would all be able to work together. I also know that my oldest wanted it mostly for music vs games. But it does it all, games, movies, music and texting. Some would say they are too young to have them but they are asking for a bike this year. I wasn't worried about my kids wanting more and more they know they can't always get what they want plus I told them if they got those to not expect much else. They are very appreciative of their ipods and have not expected more and more.
