My 9 month DD gets bits of whatever we are eating for dinner with her's every night... unless it's something really spicy or just not child-friendly at all. (Like steak...)
I know the things I have to wait to give my child until after a year but what can I give them. I have seen all the lists of stuff on websites but what about things like soups. Can I pretty much give them anything we eat as long as it's not a choking hazard?
He is 9 months..and I know to avoid honey, peanut butter, and milk until age 1 and how to prepare food. He is just so ready to try new stuff but even though I am a nurse, I have never been a mom so it makes me nervous. You read so many contradicting things it's hard to know what's ok or not. Thanks fot the advice moms!!!

I say yes. You know the foods to steer clear of, but other than that, you should be good to go! Let your little one enjoy! :)
Assuming your child is at least 6 months old, he can eat anything you can except honey (more sensitive to botulism than adults) as long as it is not a choking hazard. (Assuming you eat a healthy diet) Meats should be well cooked (risk of E coli induced multi organ failure/HUS) for kids. Current recommendations are not to wait on things like peanuts and strawberries to prevent allergies (however there are still some pediatricians who say this primarily out of habit). Soups are great (try one of those Asian/chinese restaurant porcelain/ceramic soup spoons - it will be easier for him to actually get the soup from his bowl to his mouth with it). His primary source of calories should still be breast milk or formula until a year.

Well, maybe not anything :) I wait until my kids older to expose them to fat, salt and sugar that usually high in table food. Their tiny organs still developing and we don't want to make them works extra hard because of the wrong food.
After one year, they usually old enough to handle table food. I give my kids everything that we eat as long as it is not a choking and alergy hazard. And we make sure they have the right amount of serving of veggies and fruits also.

It would help to know how old your baby is....
At about 6 months you can start giving baby well cooked, soft veggies and fruits. (I know 'they' say to start with rice cereal, but it tends to constipate them). Then around 8 months, you can introduce finely ground meats. At 10 months is when you can give cheeses and yogurt (just not milk).
Slowly change the consistency of the food so that it gets a little chunkier. That way baby can start to feed him/her self - they like that :)
Soups are great, as long as your baby's had all the ingredients, and didn't have a reaction, and the pieces are small and well cooked.
It is best to introduce one new ingredient at a time. This way if they have some kind of reaction you will have less variables in figuring out what they are. After they have had each of the things that you put in a dish, you should be good to go as long as you are following the safety guidelines ( you know, small pieces and all that jazz). :)
