Hi Ladies- I wrote earlier this summer about having thyroid surgery, and you were all so helpful. The surgery went well, removed the mass and after waiting two weeks, they had to send it out to a different lab, the first was still unsure, it was found to be NOT cancer!! Thank God! My question is, have any of you, that have had the surgery had the surgery had heart flutters afterwards? Before the surgery I felt them maybe a couple times my whole life - Im 33. Since, i have felt them a lot more - couple weeks ago i felt 3 that week. Right after the surgery i told the dr and they had me do a 24 hr. heart monitor, but nothing came back. I am on a synthroid - could that be doing it? Is it just an adjustment period after the surgery? i go see my endo dr on the 13th but would love some feedback from women who have actually had the surgery (they took out the mass and half my thyroid) - thanks sooooo muuch ladies - C.

What can I do next?

Hi C.! I also had my thyroid (and various other parts) out this summer due to metastatic thyroid cancer. It sounds like your synthroid might be a bit high. Often, after the surgery, the patient is put on a slightly higher, theraputic dose to get the TH (thyroid hormone) level back up to where it would be naturally and it might just be that your levels have stabilized and you just have too much.
I had lots of symptoms from the cancer, but also had a couple of othr thyroid issues going on at the same time (I was a MESS!) and had a high heart rate with arrythmias. My doctor gave me a low dose of a beta blocker that really helped until, in my case, my surgery. Good luck!

I have had different situations with my thyroid where I have been hyper then hypo. I know when I was hyper I had a lot of the fluttering hearts. My girlfrind was taken off if synthroid and she had a lot of the fluttering heart. Now that they put her back on it she has been doing better. We both live with the possibility of having to possibly have surgery too. I know from talking to other friends that your body usually takes 3 months or more for the body just to respond to the medicine so if they have been changing it up, it may take longer. I hope and pray that you stabilize soon. Do keep up with the doctor so if he needs to change medicine he can. I also was on a beta blocker for a while to help with the heart when I was hyper. YOur blood work will tell them more.

It could be your synthroid level is too high. Be sure to mention it to the endo as they are specialists in thyroid and can tell you what the symptoms of too high/too low meds are. I think other high synthroid level symptoms are dry skin, excessive hair loss and of course, a drop in weight.

I had thyroid surgery in 2006 where they removed the "mass" that was declared to be a goiter and all of my right thyroid. I take synthroid (not the generic brand) but I have never had heart flutters. Please continue to alert your doctors of this, go to other specialists to make sure this is normal.
