i had it with my second, but not my first, i found the belly bands, or supports helped a lot, not putting on too much weight and warm baths.
it was hateful, and i hope you dont get it again
Hello Moms!
I am 17 weeks into my third pregnancy. However, during my last pregnancy, I developed a condition called SPD (Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction). The SPD surfaced during my last trimester and the pain was close to unbearable. My doctor finally induced me at 39 weeks because walking was horrible. I was wondering if anyone else has experience with this condition? My doctor told me when I got pregnant with this baby that I would more than likely have SPD again and it would probably be worse than last time. If you experienced SPD in one pregnancy, did you experience it in subsequent pregnancies? Was it worse than before? What did you do to help ease the pain? I am really nervous for trimester #3! any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I think I have this. I read more about it at : http://www.plus-size-pregnancy.org/pubicpain.htm
I have horrible pain when walking and going up and down stairs at our house. Not to mention getting dressed. I have started getting dressed while sitting on the bed. It is much less painful. Rolling over at night is hellish !!!
I will ask my DR about it on Wed. Hopefully they will have some suggestions and I can post again.

Hi L.,
I had my 2 children at an older age and did experience some lower back pain, but I found that chiropractic care did help out quite a bit. I'm not sure if your pain was hormone related, but if not chiropractic care really does make a difference, even after the baby is born! There are some really good chiropractors out there. Also here is a link that might help with your questions. http://www.plus-size-pregnancy.org/pubicpain.htm#Cause
Have a wonderfully blessed pregnancy!

I am a Chiropractic Physician in Tempe and a mother of 2. With my 1st child I had SPD as well as with my 2nd. It was slightly less painful with my 2nd when it started but as soon as I started Chiropractic care the pain decreased and then resolved completely. Because of my personal experience I focus on pregnant women and children in my practice and see many of the same symptoms in my patients. I have had great success with decreasing and resolving symptoms. I use traditional drop technique as well as activator and webster. These techniques are all very gentle and very effective for pregnant mommies. If you have any questions or would like to schedule and appointment just give me a call at ###-###-####.
Have an amazing day!

Hi Lori!
Look into chiropractic, especially a pregnancy-trained chiropractor. The Activator Technique has a wonderful protocol for adjusting the pubic bone to help provide more stability. The Webster Technique (a technique specific for pregnancy) also can help provide more stability in the pelvis, which can help distribute your baby's weight better and put less pressure on the pubic bone.
You can find pregnancy and pediatric-trained chiropractors by going to www.icpa4kids.org. Or call me. But do it soon... addressing the area before there is significant weight-bearing is very helpful.
Good luck!
I had terrible s.p. pain during my first pregnancy. In fact, I had planned to teach until my daughter was born, but had to take medical leave the last 2 weeks because my pain was also unbearable. I would actually roll down the hallway of my school in a rolling chair.
My great fortune was that I did not have SPD during my second pregnancy!! I kept waiting for it to happen, but it never did. During my first pregnancy, I carried my daughter very low and she was head down from very early on, putting lots of pressure on my s.p. My son was breach until 37 weeks, which worried me, but I think provided my s.p. some relief. Even when he turned to head-down position, I was still okay, thankfully. I had occasional minor twinges, but not constant pain. So don't think it's a given that you'll have pain this time!
But, to ease the pain, I slept on my back with several pillows and a wedge under my back to elevate me. I used pillows for my shoulders and head in addition to the wedge, and also used 2-3 pillows under my knees/legs. I had several weeks of physical therapy to help until about the 30th week, when nothing helped. One of the things they did, was rub my pubic bone with ice (frozen in a paper cup) and rubbed directly on the skin. It hurt like hell until the area went numb and then I didn't feel pain for a few hours. I couldn't actually do this myself (the process hurt!), but my husband did it for me. It sounds terrible, and initially it is, but the break from the s.p. pain was worth it.
Best of luck!!
Y.
