Has anyone had luck using the Sylvan tutoring centers or Kumon? My son needs a little extra help in reading. He is in second grade now.

We just signed up with Sylvan in Long Beach in February and have had a very positive experience. My son is in 6th grade, just starting middle school, and was doing very poorly in math. He has already brought his grade up. They are very cooperative if I need to reschedule a tutoring session due to sports or another event. It is expensive, but gives me peace of mind that he is actually "getting it", and not just barely passing. They encourage the kids. My son goes willingly because he feels the confidence that they are helping him with. Good luck to you and yours,
B.

To be honest I would seek out a credentialed teacher who does tutoring on the side to tutor your son at this age. Ask around at his school. I worked as a tutor for one of these tutoring centers and there really is NO reason why they are charging you so much - the tutors still get about 25 dollars an hour (which is what a cred teacher will usually charge for tutoring) and the company keeps the rest for profit. When I was tutoring there I had a family paying the company 55 dollars and hour because her first grader was having mild fluency issues - I wanted so badly to tell them that they did NOT need to be paying so much for tutoring (especially for a mild issue) but I had to sign a contract stating I would never do that. On top of that they wanted so badly to quickly place students with me when I first started that they didn't even ask for my certificate of clearance (fingerprinting) or TB results. That was a little odd to me.

My son went to Kumon in San Francisco, then when we moved here he attended Sylvan. I prefer Kumon because they do homework everyday which reinforces what they learn. They learn by repitition and they are going at their own pace. They must master a certain level before going to the next, so they then feel confidant before doing new things. Good Luck

My daughter went to Kumon and went from almost failing the 5th grade to being and honor student by 6th grade. She is 20 and in college today so it was alot cheaper back then but I was very happy.
