Swollen Lymph Node in 7 y.o.

Hello Moms,

The other day my daughter complained about her neck hurting right before bed. I decided to take a look, since she had casually mentioned neck pain a few days before. After feeling her neck, I noticed quite a bit of swelling and immediately thought of a swollen lymph node. She was seen by the doctor today and the node was at least 4cm by 2cm. The doctor did a quick strep test feeling certain it would be negative, but it was in fact positive. So my daughter started antibiotics today and we are supposed to follow up with the doctor next week. Hopefully the swelling will have gone down or started to go down by then. Due to the size, the doctor said it is possible the infection is in the lymph node itself which might warrant more investigation. Has anyone else experienced this with their children? I guess I'm looking for some reassurance that the swelling might really be due to a simple strep infection and will go down with the antibiotic. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the words of encouragement everyone! I know that the lymph system is supposed to fight infections and it is probably doing what it is supposed to. Of course, being a mom, I googled swollen lymph nodes and read enough to make me nervous. Lol! I'm sure she will be fine.

Yes, she will probably be just fine. My son has had a swollen lymph node in his neck that gets bigger and smaller for the past year. No worries.

That's how lymph nodes are supposed to react to infections, so it's doing its job. If you treat the strep and it doesn't go down, you will want to investigate further, but my bet it they are entirely related.

Very common occurrence. Just means they have an infection. I am sure it will come down. Try to relax and google,is not a friend lol. The computer will always give you the worst of the worst.

Sorry thought I read you checked it out on computer. You checked her neck. Oy. The end of a long day. Again sorry.

Mine where very swollen and my neck hurt when I had strep a few weeks ago. It went away with the meds. She would be fine in a few days. If it hurts too much you might give something for pain. Mine made it very uncomfortable to sleep thats why I say that.
Hope she feels better soon!!!

my younger son battled swollen lymph nodes thru most of his childhood. His "prone" area was the back of his head/neck, & with a buzzed cut.... boy, you could really see the swelling!

This would happen about once a year. Sometimes the doc did antibiotics, sometimes not. :)

I like your doctor! He is on top of things and doesn't just dismiss things because it's unusual. Do keep an eye on this and make sure you take your son back for a follow-up. Sometimes strep needs a second round of antibiotics. Plus, the doc can check the lymph node.

Yes - mine had this and it cost us a bundle because it just popped out at recess after he was jumping off the monkey bars and they thought he had injured his neck. It was HUGE. They did a white blood cell count and it was very high. He got a shot of antibiotics and a presecription. The infection went away, the swelling went down and he's doing fine. Either way, antibiotics is the treatment, it just may be more aggressive dose-wise if it's in the lymph node itself.
