Hi, W.:
Yes, this happens when a baby, child or adult gets sick.
The lymph nodes help fight off the invading organisms.
Get the baby some Hyland Vit. C tabs and some baby
probiotics to help increase his immune system.
Good luck.

My 7 month old son had the Croup 3 weeks ago. He has his first bottom tooth on the right side coming in and weve had an awful time with it. He has had diarrhea and threw up once or twice. On Sunday, I noticed what appears to be a swollen lymph node behind his right ear. We took him to the doctor and were told he has a stomach virus that could be causing the swollen lymph node. My question is has anyone else experienced this and what was the outcome? Im a first time mom so I am paranoid about everything. Ive also heard it could be from teething.
Thank you all for the wonderful answers. you have all made me feel better. We have a follow up appt with the Pediatrician on Friday.

My daughter has frequently gotten a swollen lymph gland when ill. The teething could cause him some discomfort but not cause the swollen lymph gland. That is from illness, probably one of the many hundreds of viruses going around right now. With vomiting and diarrhea it does sound like a stomach bug. My son also will occasionally get a swollen lymph gland from illness but not as much as my daughter. We are all different. Some kids get them with every illness some only once in a while. He is fighting some virus and the lymph node is a sign of that. Keep him well hydrated, to flush his system out and it will go away once he is better.
It could be from the teething. If it is not better in a week then take him back to the doctor. I hope he feel better soon. Try some infant motrin or tylenol and some hylands teething tablets. Those will both help with the pain and help him sleep better.
If he has a virus (and lots of these going around right now), then the body is fighting it. The lymph nodes just collect all the junk that is being removed from the body and break it down - sometimes this takes a little while. One swollen node is nothing to worry about unless it lasts well beyond all his other symptoms...
