OK our whole house is getting over RSV. Yes kids and both parents. I'm more concerned with my husband. He all of a sudden developed a painful swollen area underneath his right ear. Come to find out its the parotid gland. I have read it could be an infection from getting over a illness or cancer. He got it checked by our nurse practitionerand she didn't seem like it was too bad so she gave hima zpac and she said if it weren't better after he finished it, to come back in. I'm worried this could be cancer but maybe his isn't bad. He's rarely sick but since we have had kids, both of us get sick which is normal.

Have any of you experienced this? He doesn't seem to be affected anywhere else. He said its a little painful and more annoyed with it because he's worried it could be something.

What can I do next?

Everyone take a big breath and relax!!!!

I am not a medical professional, but I have had painful and swollen glands before and so has my husband. When those glands hurt, it is usually due to inflammation or infection. I have one in my armpit and it really hurts right before my period every single month.

I have had mammograms, ultrasounds and biopsies done on it. A surgeon told me that the glands that are painful are usually not cancer, which makes sense. The ones that sneak by and grow without you knowing could be cancerous. That's why some people suddenly have a severe shock to learn they have stage 3 or 4 cancer in an area that never bothered them.

You guys did the right thing by having the N.P. look at it. Trust her opinion and check back a few days after the Z pack if things are not better.

Sounds pretty clearly liked it's related to the illness. Wait until he finishes the zpac and if it's not better have it re-checked. The most severe and painful swollen glands I've ever had were from strep throat as an adult. I couldn't even eat they were so painful and inflamed.

I've had a swollen gland under my jaw for years. It's not painful. It's not growing. The doctor checks it periodically but has never suggested anything serious.

I discovered what I thought was a swollen gland on my neck close to my shoulder. Had it checked with an ENT physician, the first one shoved it off like it was nothing, gave me anti-biotics said it would go away. So my mom encouraged me to get a second opinion and I did, Thanks God! This ENT physician was the best and was concerned right away...did tests, biopsys..etc. it wasn't cancerous again Thanks God....but it ended up being a 2 pound tumor rapped around my ribs, so they had to call in a vascular surgeon. Took out my 2 top ribs and the tumor...through my armpit with a robot called the Divinci Robot!! So to sum it all up, 1 little thing you might think is nothing can definetly turn into something bigger than you could ever imagine. Not that your husband's is but it's much better to double and triple check it out! Good luck and God bless.
