Switching from Formula to Milk - Blair,NE

My 1 year gets a high fever when I give her whole milk. She wasnt ever on soy formula, so I didnt imagine having a problem switching her to milk. I couldnt stand her sickness when I gave her milk, so I switched to soy milk. She doesnt get fever with it, but does have runny stools. I dont know if soy milk is providing her with the nutrients she needs. Is it normal for them to get fevers when switching from formula to milk? Should I try to stick it out even if shes getting a fever?

What can I do next?

I don't think that's normal. My kids had no problem with the switch.

There might be an allergy or intolerance in there somewhere.

You might consider some vitamins too, if you're concerend she might not get everything she needs from soy milk (you could also try almond or rice milk).

I think you should talk to your pediatrician about this.
I would be hesitant to give my child that much SOY anything.

I think it would be good to ask her pediatrician about the problem she's having :)

I have never heard of fevers due to switching to milk...however it could be possible. What surprises me the most if that she wasn't on soy formula. I would speak with your pediatrician...and until you find answers keep her on milk based formula. I would hesitate to give my child too much soy, but that's just my opinion. Good luck!

Soy milk is a perfectly healthy option - however, it is highly unlikely the the fever was related to the milk. I agree with the other moms that it was likely a coincidence. Try the whole milk again and see what happens. I'm pretty sure that's what your ped will say. (Both my kids are sensitive to certain foods - one eggs and blueberries, the other milk and nuts, so I've been through the whole "are they allergic or not" process twice.) If you try the milk again, and she gets a fever again, then talk to your ped.

I had to switch my daughter to soy milk shortly after learning (at age 1) that cows milk didn't agree with her body. Soy milk is perfectly fine to give your daughter and will provide the same amout of nutrients as cows milk. My pediatrician gave me the thumbs up for soy milk and we've never looked back. My son on the other hand (a twin to his sister on soy) can't tolerate soy milk because it gives him diarrhea, like your daughter. I would speak to your peditrician about this issue. But bottom line, soy milk is totolly fine for your 1 year old. Best wishes!

Regular formula is milk based so she has been drinking a milk product all along. Since she has diarrhea now maybe she has some type of virus. If she needs to stay on formula a while longer your doc can tell you which of the extended formulas to try. I know of one little buy in my child care center that used an extended formula until he was almost 20 months, he got WIC and since they got a doc's prescription WIC gave her vouchers for the formula.

One thing you might need to try is weaning her off of the formula.
You start out mixing 2 oz. of whole vitamin d milk in 6 oz. of formula. Give her that until she is tolerating the drink very well, it can take a few days of a couple of weeks.

Then you go half and half for another couple of days to a couple of weeks. This gives her system a chance to get used to processing the milk.

Once she is doing that well then mix 6 oz. of milk with 2 oz. of formula. This stage is usually the shortest. She will be doing well at this point and should be able to drop the formula all together within a few days.

If formula is not transitioned well to milk the child's whole system can get messed up. One of my child care kids had white pooh that made me puke if I was even in the same room. I would change her diapers and wrap a rag around my face and still stand and gag. Those were some quick changes....

If you little one is still having problems with the transition then her doc needs to see you and her for a consult so they can make a recommendation for you.

Are you sure it was the milk and she just wasn't feeling good? It could have been a coincidence.

Hi S.---YOur daughter's body is trying to tell you something. Cows milk is NOT a healthy food for humans. Please go to www.pcrm.org and put dairy in the search box. YOu can also read interesting info at www.notmilk.com. I also work with a healthcare professional, read her advice at www.DrFood.org.

If your daughter is eating a balanced diet with lots of fruits and veggies, she is getting most of the nutrients she needs. I personally feel that the good grown today does not have the nutrient density it once had...or that is needed for optimal health and disease prevention. So I do recommend supplementing with a WHOLE FOOD BASED product.

There is lots more ABSORBABLE calcium in broccoli, spinach, bok choy and sesame seeds (eat hummus...chick peas and tahini, which is ground sesame seeds). Water should be her beverage of choice. You can try other plant milks to use for cooking and cereals...rice, almond, hemp, oat and coconut. These, along with soy, are all fortified.

I have some great charts with fruit and veggie serving size recommendations, along with lots of other helpful info that you can use to offer your family the nutrition needed for optimal health. Feel free to contact me at any time. It is my passion to help reverse this trend of younger and younger people getting diseases that were once only gotten by the elderly. We are in trouble, and it's mostly because we do not eat enough WHOLE FOOD. I look forward to hearing from you. Good luck, D.
