Switching Back and Forth Between Formulas?

Is it ok to go from using one kind of formula to using another and so forth? We've been using Similac and have Enfamil as well, but not sure if it's ok to go from one to the other. Thanks.

What can I do next?

More than likely, there's no reason not to. The concerns against that have to do with allergies and sensitivities. Parents are encouraged to stick with one brand for a little while so that if baby does have a problem it will be fairly easy to figure out which formula is the culprit.

We used all of our Similac samples, then all of our Enfamil samples, then purchased the store brand. I asked our ped about that, and she assured me that, unless baby has a reaction, the store brand is just as healthy and safe as the name brand. Saved us a lot of money, as the store brand tends to be just over half the price of the name brand.

If you know baby does fine with Similac, go ahead and use the Enfamil. I would use it for at least a week just to be safe. That way you will feel confident that baby is ok with Enfamil, too.

If you have a pretty easy baby who has done fine on the similac, I would go ahead and try the enfamil. However, I would watch for any difference in his/her gas, mood etc. If there is no difference, you should be able to go back and forth just fine.

We used to with our first kiddo - no problems! Some babies prefer or are bothered by a particular formula but switching between Similac and Enfamil worked for us!

Yopur child may do fine on a different formula but make sure you trasition them to it not just give it and that be it. Say your child drinks a 6 oz bottle make it 2 oz new formula 4 old for a few days then increase the new formula every few days by one ounce. It wil take a week or two depending on how much they take in a setting. Good luck

As long as your child doesn't have a sensitive tummy then its ok, but not ideal. Formula is so different from one brand to the next--so I would be careful.

My son has never had any issues with different brands, but I always make sure that the formulas are all comparable to each other.

Yeah, I think it's better to stick with one or another. If you go back and forth, I think you need to transition. Like mix a little of the new kind in with what you're using for a while. My oldest son would spit up more with certain kinds of formula when I tried switching him. So we just ended up sticking with one brand--we had to go back to it when the other kind upset his tummy. By the way--don't let the mama below make you feel bad. How ridiculous. I'm sure your milk is already dried up (like mine has) and you don't have breast feeding as an option any longer. So how nice of her to try to make all of us formula-feeding mamas feel guilty. We all choose the path that is best for our families and some of us don't have breast feeding as an option for various reasons.
