My husband and I have been back and forth about wheather to give our children (2 & 7 years old) the Swine Flu vaccine. I know back in 79 the Swine Flu Vaccine killed more people then the Swine Flu itself and most of those people were children. I know science has come a long way since then but it still frightens me. I watched the View today and Dr. Oz was saying that there are so meny different flu bugs in the Swine Flu and that our best defence would be to take Vit D. I just was courious as to what all of you will do. Thanks!!

What can I do next?

Do NOT do it!! I talked to my drs about "swine flu" and they (there are 6 and I asked 5) said that swine flu is just a scare and flu is flu. You get cold chills, times when your hot, cough, fever, diahreia and vomiting. Even if you get the vaccine it doesn't keep you from getting another flu because there are thousands of flus. Also you do not know what is in that shot.

We are not going to vaccinate for the swine flu in our home. For a couple of reasons. First, I am not into vaccinating in the first place. It took a lot of convincing from my husband and doctors to even do the basics with my children. I've studied a lot of the info available about vaccinations and there's so much conflicting info that it's hard to determine what's true and what isn’t. So I did but only chose certain ones and only because certain diseases are making a comeback because of the large amount of children not receiving vaccines any longer. However, I'm still very leery about doing it so we will not be administering anything that isn't completely necessary. I have sons but there's that new vaccine for girls that prevents the human papaloma (sp?) virus and if I had daughters there's no way I would give that to them. I'd like to see it on the market for a few decades and see what comes from it before making that decision. The FDA has on more than several occasions gave the green light for medications & vaccinations that have caused secondary diseases, birth defects and even death.

I personally feel the government is reacting to the press that’s come to light on this topic. I do agree that this is what our government is for but in some cases, such reaction isn’t really necessary. 10,000’s of people die every year from the standard flu every year worldwide so I have no idea why they are making this seem like such a worst case scenario. Yes, there have been deaths from the swine flu but not anything worse than the flu people die from all the time anyway. And the flu vaccine is terribly difficult to nail down so that vaccine has a minimal likelihood of actually working anyway. How knows if the swine flu vaccine is any different.

So we are taking a pass on this vaccine but that’s just us. Like anything medically and your family, it’s a personal decision between you and your husband but I just don’t see the necessity in giving vaccines that may or may not work, and inevitably cause more harm than good.

First of all, I'm sorry to hear about your little boy. Your "a little about me" made me cry. Sending you a hug.

As for swine flu, we asked our doctor if he is giving it to his own kids and he said no.

Practice especially good health habits this fall and winter, turn your thermostat down durning the day if you're not home (like down to 60) and open windows in bedrooms every day for a few minutes. This winter, keep the house at 68-69 degrees - certain cold and flu bugs/viruses can't live in temps that cold so your home will be a healthier place to begin with.

Also, if one of your kids gets sick with flu-like symptoms, take them into the doctor. Swine flue is treatable and there are meds that can lessen symptoms.

I'm not giving the vaccine to my kids (although they are getting the regular flu vaccine) but plan to do the above and get them in at the first symptoms.

Bottom line, you need to make your own decision when it comes to your kids - I usually find out what my doctor is doing with his own kids and go from there.

Hi W.! My daughter was just in to see her pediatrician last week and she personally suggested that we get the flu and swine flu vaccination for our 2.5 year old daughter. I am not sure myself yet if that is something we (my husband and I) are going to do. I was a little worried because my daughter started preschool this year and before this year hasn't been in daycare or schools.
