So we were supposed to be flying to Maui out of LAX this Sunday now with this recent flu outbreak I was wondering if you Moms would still go on the trip? or not? I am also 16 weeks pregnant..... Should we be concerned or just roll with it?

On a side note the lil guy is still recovering from a nasty cough (runny nose) and a double ear infection. He will be finishing his last dose of antibiotics the sunday we fly out....

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks moms for your advice, our neice who is also 1, and going with us to Maui's mom put me at ease as well. She wasn't too worried. As for his ears when I took him in initially we discussed flying. The ped pretty much said its up to me and how he's feeling the day we need to leave...I have a f/u appt schedule this Thusday to check the ears b4 we fly. And he's going to the chiropractor twice this week so I have no concerns about the ears at this point...

Just didn't know how concerned to be about this "flu" and his already compromised immunes system...Daddy seems to be okay with it we've been planning this trip for a 6 mths so we really want to go....

Hi Amy,

Go go go. The odds of contracting swine flu are miniscule and even if by some odd chance you do, every case in the US so far has only produced mild flu symptoms which can easily be treated. Take this opportunity to have a lovely vacation with your husband and little boy before the baby comes.

I am off to Scotland next week and Greece in June and there is no way I would cancel either trip. I used to work in the World Trade Centre and the one thing I learned from that experience is you can't live in fear of things that are beyond your control.

Have a fantastic time in Maui. All the best, D.

I have always been the least nervous nellie person and of strong constitution. When I was pregnant with my daughter in 2005 I went on vacation to Cape Cod....when we arrived home I became sick...thinking bad flu. I ended up contracting meningitis at 5 mos pregnant. The CDC put me on antibiotics and my daughter was born a month early and deaf in one ear ( most probably due to the class of antibiotics....but nothing legal we can do). Goodluck making your decision.....if you do become ill with anything while pregnant make sure not to take any antibiotics that may effect the hearing nerves even if the doctors say the chances are minimal.

Hi Amy

I'd be almost more concerned with his earaches.. taking off and landing can be soooooooo painful on the ears as it is, couple that with an earache and OUCH... might want to contact your doctor and make sure it's ok to fly... I know you said that Sunday will be the last day he takes antibiotics, but you may want to have a checkup prior to going just to make sure the swelling in his ears is gone..

best of luck to you!!

Don't cancel your trip, but definitely don't use masks. The best protection against catching the Swine Flu it to limit the spread of germs - constant hand washing, disenfecting surfaces, toys, etc. You want to keep your hands away from your face, nose, mouth, eyes as much as possible to limit contamination. A mask would only perpetuate the possibility of catching something. Plus, the masks the general population can find are not the right kind to protect from catching this virus. It is a false sence of security, and not what you want to do.

Carry hand sanitzing wipes that you can buy in Walgreens or Target. You can carry these on the plane with you and they come in indvidual use packets.

Have a great vacation!

On the swine flu -- so far it looks like you'll be safe. However, if you have any flu-like symptoms, get to a doctor right away for antiviral medicine.

Hi Amy,

They are suggesting that everyone build their immune system up since there is no other solution to treat this virus.

If you would like some other options on how to build your immune system let me know and I will show you.

I am a wellness consultant. Keep your body strong you do not have to worry about it getting sick.

Have a safe trip.

Go to Maui.....The Swine Flu is not a valid reason to cancel a trip. Only 2 rare cases have been confirmed in LA, and the treatment is available if you do get it. It is more of a panic headliner for the news than a reality for the public to worry about. :) Enjoy your vacation.
