Swim Lessons for 4 Year Old

I'm wanting to sign my 4 year old, Mark, up for some swim lessons. I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars, but I do want him to be in a class where they're actually, in some kind of way, teaching him how to swim, as opposed to just playing around in the water. He's the size of a 5 year old, and has about the same maturity and learning level (in most ways) as a 5 year old. I've noticed most rec centers have a preschool class for 3-5 year olds, then they have a level 1 class for 5-6 year olds. Several years ago we took swim lessons at the Hurst Aquatic center. Mark was moved up from the infant/toddler class to the preschool class when he was less than 2 (a little over 1 1/2). They said he was too advanced for the first class. So - I'm hoping I can get him in at least a level 1 class. Any idea how to do that? I guess call and talk to them? I wonder if they would do that for us. I checked into keller natatorium, but they only have the spring class schedule online. I like their prices. Or is there a better place? I did look into this place called aquakids, but that's over 200.00...way too much in my opinion :) My main focus if for him to learn to swim across the pool if possible so he can go down the slide at this one pool we go to a lot. They won't let him slide unless he can swim across the pool on his own, and he just can't comprehend that rule :). I think he can do it, but just where should we go for lessons? Or if anything he can at least have some fun, if there aren't any good swim teachers out there. Of course me and my family try to teach him too...we don't have a pool but my husband's parents do. Mark is with them this week. Thanks for any advice!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I think we've decided on YMCA. I took lessons at the Y when I was little (many MANY years ago LOL) so that means a lot to me that my son can take swim lessons there too. We just completed their soccer program and were very pleased, so we're hoping swim lessons will be great there too. I'm just trying to figure out which level he should be. He took swim lessons for the first time when he was almost 2, and since he was a baby he's always LOVED the water. So the first level pike, where it says they're new to an aquatic environment and afraid of the water - that's not him. But second level says he can float without assistance and jump in the pool with assistance?? Umm, not sure if he can float by himself - that's the only thing. I told my in laws (where he is now) to work on that with Mark in their pool this week. Wish us luck! OF course, maybe he can float on on his back (I really don't know), and other things, making him level 3 - we'll see. Either way I like it that they have these different levels instead of just throwing the kids all in together. That means I guess he'll learn something. I did look at aquakids, and would love to have signed him up there, but I was quote a price of 200 something for lessons - that's just way more than I wanted to spend. 70-75 sounds just about right.
Thanks so much everyone!

My son started at Aqua Kids in Keller about 11 weeks ago. 11 weeks ago he would not even put his face in the water (he is 3). Last night he went to swim lessons and he swam all the way across the pool by himself. I almost passed out! He also floated on his back last night, unassisted. He use to HATE to be put on his back. I can not reccomend this place enough!! This is the 3rd place I have tried swim lessons and the ONLY place that has worked. Good luck!

My son is 4, almost 5 and he took swim lessons right before his 4th birthday last year at the YMCA. He LOVED IT!. He was terrified of the water and would choke the tar out of me and now he'll hold on to the side of the pool and go all the way around with no problem. At the Ymca, it's only two weeks long but like I said, in just those two weeks... he learned so much! They meet twice a week and it's only 75 dollars for the 2 weeks. I'm signing my son back up tomorrow for this summer. You should check there, especially since there is ymca's in almost every area in DFW.

We've used KISD natatorium for my daughter's swim lessons since she was 2 and are very happy with the results. She's 3 1/2 and will be in the 5-6 year old level one class this summer. They're prices are reasonable and the instructors and staff are wonderful. Their summer schedule is online but they are almost full for the summer. Good luck!

The YMCA is the way to go. My girls go to the one in Lewisville/FM. It meets for two weeks, 30-45 inutes per session, Monday-Thursday, no Friday session. They went last year and did great. My one daughter was 5 and they moved her up the first day and my other was 3 and did great. I like that they don't have me in the water with them because to me that defeats the purpose. They are taking lessons again this year the first session the beginning of June. It is proabably about $75/session. I have a friend that is taking her child to the Winkids pool in FM and paying almost $200 for one day a week for 10 weeks. To me I think it is better to concentrate and have them learn then to spread it over the whole summer...jmop.
Good Luck!

They have life jackets at Wal Mart and one of my kids learned by getting the confidence with that. He would jump off the dive and swim around then soon he was throwing the jacket in and swimming to it then he did not need the jacket. I took lessons with my children when they were 6 ms and at 2 and half. The more exposure the more then learn. I take the little ones with floaties or jackets. YMCA is a good source for lessons and membership allows you all to go. I had my grandddaughter in one summer and after that she swims like a fish. G. W

We're starting Aqua Kids this week! My DD is 4 and from the looks of it, they have specific goals for the kids. Their site is www.aquakids.com. I'll let you know how it goes!
