I know that a little swelling is normal in pregnancy. Today, I noticed I am swollen all over & mostly in my hands & face. I am more swollen than usual. I have only been swollen in my feet before but not bad. Today, I look like the Michelin Man. :( Is this a normal thing? Can I take water pills to get rid of the extra water?

What can I do next?

As others have said sudden swelling is a sign that something could be wrong so call the doctor asap and keep drinking fluids.

Call your doctor. This can be hypertension of pregnancy (high blood pressure) renal function slowing down (kidneys) thryroid and hormonal abnormalities. All of these can end your pregnancy so run don't walk to the doctor or midwife and get help immediately. Do not wait.

Absolutely do not take any pills of any kind unless your OB tells you to. Call tyhe OB as soon as you can. It could just be that you ate lots of salty food, or it could be something very serious, as others have said.

I had pre-eclampsia with my first child and those were exactly my symptoms. drink LOADS of water and go call your OB NOW. I delivered within 36 hours of my onset of symptoms because they couldn't control my blood pressure.

You need to see your doctor immediately and discuss this, because there is a condition that occurs in pregnant women called toxemia in pregnancy.

Below I have copied some information regarding toxemia from the website amazing pregnancy.com:

Medically speaking, Toxemia is pregnancy induced hypertension. Roughly 7% of pregnant women will develop at least mild Toxemia. Severe toxemia, however, can cause many health problems. Serious Toxemia may develop into something called pre-eclampsia, which can then lead to eclampsia, followed by a serious complication called the HELLP Syndrome.

Toxemia starts to develop as the placenta begins to develop. Toxemia is most likely to occur during first-time pregnancy. The causes of Toxemia are not known, and it is not possible to screen for Toxemia prior to pregnancy. The symptoms of toxemia are elevated blood pressure, protein in the urine, and hyper-reflexia (extremely fast reflex responses.) Other symptoms may include bloating of the hands, feet and face due to fluid retention. These symptoms warn of worse to come if they are not heeded.

I would start by staying off your feet. Then you need to drink lots of water and call your dr. It is not normal to swell that much over night.

Good luck and God Bless!

swelling is normal. Sudden and extremem swelling isn't. Do not take diuretics because they can dehydrate the baby. Go see your doctor.
