Hi there. We have been invited to a Sweet 16 next month. I am from Michigan, but live in New Jersey now, so this is a whole new thing to me. I am assuming $ is the appropriate gift to get, but how much? Normally when we go to a wedding, I give $100 per person (depending on who's wedding I may give more). So it is the same for these or what? thanks.
Edit: It is at a catered hall with DJ, photographer, favors, the works.
If it's like a catered sit down dinner and dancing and all then you are probably in the right ballpark. It's a generous gift so I hope that they aren't just acquaintances. Give what you feel comfortable giving. Have a great time!
My daughter turns 16 this year also. I would think that you would treat it like any other birthday but maybe just a hint of "extra special," if you know what I mean. $100 seems very generous for this kind of birthday but if that's how you feel in your heart, then go for it. =)
My daughter just turned 16 and to our surprise she did not want the big bru ha ha... Thank goodness!!
We've been there done that on the country club DJ, dinner parties and even still, we specified "no gifts please" on the invite.
That said.... our daughter opted for low key ( yep, I'll be hit hard for the 18th, LOL) and she received several gift cards from family, NONE over $50 and mostly for her favirote store Hollister. She would appreciate a card for gas since she got my car and she has to provide fuel.
Depending on how well you know the family, I believe $100 is generous and if you read my profile, etc... I have a kid who wants for nothing and has had some major league arties thrown for her and her friends to have fun.
And NO, I do not automatically assume this is a spoiled kid. Some of us enjoy throwing big parties for many friends to enjoy.
wow....spoiled kid LOL!!!! I think $100 is a lot considering she is only 16!!!! What happens when you get the HS grad announcement and 18 birthday party invite and then college?????? Wedding....Give what you feel you must ...my goodness
Sweet 16's sure have gotten out of hand. My daughter is turning 16 this year, and we wont' be having a photographer or a gown from a bridal store! Money or a gift card is appropriate, but I wouldn't feel obigated to pay for the plate, it is not a wedding or a bar mitzvah, it's simply a birthday party. I don't know the relation to the birthday girl or if you're very close but I'd probably give $50. My daughter's friends' sweet 16's have typically been in a rented hall with a DJ and she gives $25 as a gift
