This weekend my 4 year old son started to sweat a lot while sleeping, he falls asleep and within 15 minutes he is soaking wet around his hair line with sweat dripping onto his face. We have also noticed that there is sweat beads around his upper lip. This usually lasts for 15-30 minutes and then he is fine, no more sweating. He has not had a fever and does not appear to be sick. There has been no temperature change in our house (so I don’t believe that the reason is that the house is too warm). Has anyone else experienced this??
I would look up Sleep hyperhidrosis. Everyone in my family has gone through this at one point or another. It can be genetic, it can happen for no reason. Find a few sites about it and gather your own opinion. If you have any concerns after that talk to your pediatrician
My 3 year has done this since he was a baby. We could always tell when he was starting to drift off because he started sweating like there was no tomorrow. Once he was sleeping for a few minutes, he stops. I'm not sure why its happening, but I wanted to let you know that you are not alone.
It is so nice to know I am not alone! I wish I had an explanation but I can't give you one. My 4 year old does the same, his hair will be soaking wet, sweat standing on his back it is horrible, and like your son it's right after he falls asleep. To solve the issue I have been only covering him with his sheet and then about 30 minutes later I cover him with his comforter also. This has really helped! I also don't use the heavy winter jammies anymore. Too bad there wasn't anymore responses that could offer an explanation. If you find one, I would love to hear the reasoning!
A., my son,too, has been a sweaty sleeper most of his life. He is 5 years old now. The sweating is usually the most prominent when he is very tired, right when he goes to sleep, or when he is taking a nap and sleeping very heavily. Interestingly, right before he needs a nap or is very tired, he does run a slightly higher temp (at least he did when he was a baby and a toddler). But once he is awake, his temp is norm and the sweating is gone. But it is unnerving when they have sweat through their pillows and are soaked in their clothes. I don't worry much about it because he seems fine after a good sweaty sleep. :)
My 4yo son also does this. I only put his sheet and light blanket on him at first and then when I check on him a few hours later, before I go to bed, I put his comforter on him.
You know, I read this and thought, I wonder if my kids do this! But I don't know, because once they're asleep, I say a prayer of thanksgiving and tiptoe around the house hoping they will sleep for at least a few hours before they wake up! I'd be willing to bet there are more kids who do it; their parents just don't know!
My daughter has sweated profusely when she's slept ever since she was a baby; she'll be 9 years old this month. She doesn't like hot or heavy PJs and will often wear shorts and a short-sleeve shirt to bed. I ask if she's cold, especially in the winter, but she insists she's always hot.
I've noticed that since she was diagnosed with heavy metal poisoning last Aug 2008 that as she's been chelating (taking medicine that helps her body get rid of the heavy metals), the amount of sweating she does at night has gone down. Drastically. She is to start a third round here in a week or so, and I'm hopeful after this one is finished, there will be virtually no smore weating. She literally used to sweat so much, it was as if someone washed her hair overnight!
