My son is 9 weeks old and he is waking himself up in the middle of the night to get out of his swaddle. No matter how tight it is, he finds a way to get out. We tried the miracle blanket and he still gets out. Does anyone have a solution for this. When his arms are out he goes crazy. He needs them pinned down, but always finds a way out, Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

What can I do next?

Hi B.-

I think you should just try using a large light weight baby blanket. (Not the normal size receiving blanket kind that you get from the hospital.)

I did an online search and looked at a few videos of you just now. I think the one I am including does a great job at showing and informing moms and dads how to swaddle. http://www.babycenter.com/2_how-to-swaddle-a-baby_1034712...

I would look into a woombie. It's like a sleep sack but you can put their arms inside the bag so that they wont startle them selves awake. My son loved his and used it till he was 6 months.
They now make one that is convertible and you can take the arms out once transitioning is around the corner. And they make one that you can put your baby in the car seat. It's great! Wish they had them when I bought one! Here is their website:

He is definitely not done with the swaddle, don't give up it is just natural that they will break out. The swaddle has been a life saver with both of our kids, it is AMAZING! Both of mine broke out and would wake themselves up, for my daughter we ended up breaking out the big guns.. LOL First make sure you have the right swaddling blanket, if it is not big enough and made of that stretchable cotton then it will not be very secure. For my daughter we ended up swaddling her in the regular blanket and then we used the velcro swaddle blanket thing on top. She looked like she was in a stray jacket but she slept like a dream :) It was so cute she would go from full on screaming to laughing when you laid her on the blanket, she knew what was coming. My son just needs the swaddle to get to sleep but it seems like when he sleeps most times he breaks himself out of it, but still remains sleeping.

Good luck, don't give up on the swaddle it will make your life so much easier :)

It might be time for a sleep sack or wearable blanket.

sounds like he's done with the swaddle. Some babies just don't take to being swaddled like others do. My first baby loved it. My current newborn won't have being pinned. She was fine for the first week but after that she would squirm and grunt like houdini until she freed herself.

I don't know what the miricle blanet is, but this is what I did, years and years ago. I went to the fabric store and purchased baby flanel, 1 1/4 yards. I trimmed the edges with basting tape, but you would really not have to do this and could just make sure to be careful that it did not frey, and baby flanel is not likely to do that. Anyway, that will be a very large square, and the weight is very light so that you can swaddle him tightly. My kids could not get out of this, and being square, it was really easy to use. Cheap too.

One of the nurses in the maternity ward showed me how to swaddle and knot it in the back....neither of my kids EVER could get out of it...hard to explain over internet blog but I am sure you can figure it out. I stopped swaddling my son around 9 sweeks but my daughter needed it till about 4 mos.

Try a bigger blanket and one that does not have much give to it. When you do the first side, tuck the blanket as far behind his back as you can - and make sure it is quite tight.

Then, when you do the bottom part up, also pull that so it tucks behind the back, as far around as you can get it.

When you do the second side, pull that all the way around and tuck it into the crease on the front.

The key is to get it so that their weight is helping to keep the swaddle tight.

I kept my son swaddled for MONTHS. He outgrew the blanket so I bought a bigger one. It was great!

Have you considered that he doesn't like it anymore and his crying is that he wants the rest of him free? My youngest hated to be swaddled, from the beginning she would cry every time the nurses swaddled her and stop as soon as I let her free. It was a little frustrating the first night in the hospital because every time a nurse came into my room she would swaddle her and my daughter would start crying and then I would let her free and she would stop. Finally I told them to stop because she didn't like it.
We used wedges with both our kids, they prevent the baby from rolling, but allow you to place the baby on their side. We used to tuck the blanket under the front and back of the wedges. It was cozy for the baby but not confining. Also, my youngest hates to be too warm and as a baby would wake up crying if she was too warm.

My daughter was like this too. I thought she was tired of being swaddled but I learned quick that she needed to be swaddled to sleep! Have you tried the swaddlers from babies r us that have velcro on them? They have 3 fasten points so they are very secure. I wrapped her in that pretty tight and then swaddled her again inside a stretchy blanket that I could get tight too. Also the fleece swaddlers seem to work better than the cotton swaddlers. Just remember to keep his room somewhat cool so he doesn't overheat. Good luck!
