Surprised by Something as Simple as Juice!!

I shopped at Shaws the other day, I usually go to Hannaford (or Whole Foods), and bought some grape juice and some apple juice for my children. My oldest daughter, my sleuth in residence,
was reading the juice bottles and asked me if I knew that the concentrate came from China. I know organic is best and we do our best but I nearly fell over. We put a moratorium on all toys from China this Christmas and now I found out that that I was simply pouring potentially contaminated ingredients down their throats. I was stunned is anyone else?

What can I do next?

Juice concentrate from China is not going to contain lead as do the paint in the plastics from toys.
The fact that the concentrate comes from China would be the least of my worries... the fact that feeding your child juice + 3 servings of fruit a day contributes more sugar (in juice form natural or not, it enters the blood stream faster) into the system thus increasing the bodies insulin response.
I personally have always steered clear of juice but for an occaisonal treat. My children drink water.

My husband recently read an article in USA today about Apple Juice. He insists that we buy Martinelli for our 19 month old son. According to the article it is the only apple juice made 100% from US apples. It's pricey but we feel it's worth it. I get it at Wild Oats and/or Stop and Shop.

I hadn't noticed that on the labels, since I usually concentrate more on avoiding food dyes and high fructose corn syrup. However, I am not surprised at all. Orchards in our area have been failing for years because of foreign competition.....mainly China. So, support your local orchards by visiting them during the season. Did you know you can freeze cider? Just take out about a cup to allow room for freezing expansion.

Hi E.

I'm a 47 year old mother of four ages 28, 22, 8, 6 and one grandson 6. I'm also a nurse (cardiac) and work evenings (thirty hours) Crazy isn't it? I agree, I am very leary of products now. Hadn't thought of the food products though. Good for your daughter! I'll keep my eye out. We also have placed a moratorium on Chinese products. (try to avoid them!)
Makes you wonder who is looking out for our best interests. We've given away all our manufacturing jobs and we can't trust our government to maintain regulations! Good Luck!

I am a nurse in a nursing home and we discovered the same about the juices we're giving to our residents! (the administrator is working with the supplier to change this)I was shocked but never thought to check the bottles at the grocery store. It just shows you can't take anything for granted anymore.

Hi,

I had purchased apple juice also from Shaws and noticed the same thing! I was reluctant to give it to my son. I cant believe that we live in an area that we have fresh apple orchards but our local grocers carry juice imported from other countries! I think this is a huge problem, both for safety concerns as well as economical. Its pretty frightening when you purchase food products and they are not even made in America!

I hadn't heard or seen this. I read labels most of the time and I will need to watch for this. We are very careful in the fruit we buy. We buy only from the USA, due to places like Mexico and Chile where they are allowed to use human manure as fertilizers. So, we wait for the grapes and cherries and such to come into season here, in the good ole' USA! It is very sad that there is so much of this junk coming in from everywhere, just for the profits!
It is like trying to purchase a pair of shoes made in the USA, it is nearly impossible. They are all from china. We tried to buy a toaster last year and they were ALL made in China. Eeeekkk!

I saw that another mom recommended to buy organic, but even many "organic" juices come from foreign concentrates. I was shocked when I noticed it too, especially on my "organic" juice. We have switched to cider from local orchards.

I just learned this last fall, that many of our apples are from China as well. Buy Organic is the only way I guess.
