I am scheduled to have a breast reduction in a month. This is something I Have been trying to have for a couple of years. Now that the time has come, I'm a nervous wreck. Can anyone who has had the surgery or knows someone who has please let me know about their experiences. How did it go, how much pain were you in, how long did it take to recover, any complications, anything that came up after the surgery that you may not have thought about? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello T.,

You will be just fine. I had the surgery done many years ago, and it was the best thing I have ever done ( except having kids.:) ) Make sure you follow all the instructions post surgery, it is very important. I was very much in pain at first but it decreased with time, make sure you rest a lot...Also, have several pillows on your bed when you will come back after surgery, that was the hardest thing for me was to be on my back, but a lot of pillows were great, it keeps you up a little so you do not have too far to go down..:)You will not be able to carry heavy things at first...so if you can have help with your child and house cleaning for a little while that would be great. If you have any more questions, feel free to e-mail me. Nath

I'm new to the page, just signed up today. I was reading through and getting an idea of what was out there and read your question. I don't know if I have any answers just more questions myself. I have a follow-up consultation next week for mine reduction. I have been seeing a Dr. that has done to memeber of my family. They had great results. It seems that they were in discomfort for about 2 weeks after the procedure.
If you could let me know how it goes I would be very grateful.
Sincerely,
C.

T.,
I had the surgery back 1997, by Dr. Michael Bentley in Montgomery. It went fabulous! I had the surger on Fri. and was back a work on Monday. I had minimal swelling and never took ven as much as 1 tylenol for pain afterward. A lot of your pain and recovery of course depends on how large your breasts are prior to surgery, I was a DD taken down to a C cup. My recovery totatl time was about 4-5 weeks. But other than not being able to sleep on my stomach or pick up heavy items it was no sweat. I couldn't wear regular bras for about 3 months. It was the best thing I have ever done for myself and would do it again without hesitation. At that time I was in the process fo a divorce and had no children. It was an amazing ego boost for me. Since then, I have re-married, and had 2 children, both of which I successfully breast fed! Although the breast feeding did take a toll on some of the "perkiness" if you will, I can still go without a bra if I choose. If I had to list a "drawback", it would be that there is a loss of sensativity to some of the outer areas. I can still feel, but it is less than before. Immediately after the surgery I could barely feel anything but the nipple area, but that got better after time. I felt then and still do now that that was a very small price to pay for all the positive benifits the surgery gave me physically and emotionally. Please do this for yourself, you will be so glad you did. I don't know who the doctor is but that also makes a difference. If you have not chosen one, please give Dr. Bentley the opportunity. Especially if you plan on having any more chilren and breast feeding. He is the leading physician in the Montg. area for breast surgeries. If you have anymore questions or just want to talk e-mail me with a way to contact you and I will be glad to call you.

I personally didnt have the surgery... all though i would absolutely love to. I am currently a size 40 D and I hate it. It seems that all im known for are large breast... My mother had the same problem and eventually found lumps in her breast so she has a reduction done. I dont want to frighten you but i will be honest. The surgery is extremely painful after it is finished. mom described it as an elephant standing on her chest. reason being... you have the surgery and the pain and the pressure is normal but they will wrap you in dressings to keep your breast from moving any. you have to change the dressing everyday so the risk of infection is reduced. the pain med help so make sure to get some. but i will tell you what... when it is all said and done its nice to have done it. no more back pain, strain to your neck, or bra straps cutting into your shoulders. the only thing i suggest is go a little bit smaller than you want to go because she got a size b and she is now a full c again. you might gain a bra size. it has been 6 years now since she did it and the scares look pretty good. not to much there. Anyhow, something you just have to think about is with all surgeries there is gonna be pain, but in the long run its gonna be worth it for what ever reason your doing it! It took her about 3 weeks until she could really get back to herself without hurting. you have to account for the time and have someone to help you. preferably someone who you are comfortable with seeing your breast... your gonna need the help changing the dressing!
hope i helped a little more than the scare..... Its all worth it!

Hi T.! I had a breast reduction in September of last year. I had my surgery early in the morning and I stayed one night. I had a drain placed on both of the ends of the incision. (The incisions went from just under one armpit to another) Those came out before I left. I had to sleep sitting up for a while (I can't remember how long), I took my pain medicine pretty regularly for about the first week. I was also told to use maxi pads for drainage absorption and they worked wonderfully. I would recommend button up shirts as trying to get them over your head will be difficult for a while. I was told to massage the incisions to make them softer. I got front latching sports bras for not only the convenience of getting them on but also for support. I had the "anchor" incision so they reconstructed my nipples too. I can't say they are the most symmetrical nips around but I guess it could be worse. Over all I don't regret it. I wish I had done it sooner in fact! It took 3.5 lbs off my chest and I feel so much better!!!
Good luck to you!!

Hello, my name is K., I had the surgery about 3 weeks ago. I was nervous too. I got really nervous when they took me back to the surgery waiting part. But everything went great! I am so glad I did it. My back pain was gone pretty much instantly. I was pretty sore for at least a couple of days. I had the surgery on a Wed. and was back driving again on Monday. I was not back to normal but did not need my pain meds, I mainly took them to help me sleep. Everyone responds different to things, but I am sure you will do fine, I felt the same way before mine. I still am sore, but no pain. Good Luck with the surgery and if you need to talk or have any more in detail questions you would like me to anwser, feel free to email me I would be glad to. My email is ____@____.com!

I had my surgery two months ago at Richmond Plastic Surgery and I'm very pleased and glad I did it. The surgery went smooth. The most nervous part for me was when he started to draw on my breast. This is done so he knows where he wants everything to be and how straight. Recovery was only bad for the first 24 hours. The most pain full part for me was the removal of my drainage tubes. All the nurse did was count to three then pulled them out. Once they were removed it was much easier to get around, go to the bath room, or to even sit.The nurse also told me to use thin maxi pads instead of gauze for the wounds and that worked really well and it was less exspensive. The only problem I have now is buying to many bras. I went from a 38ddd to a 38c and I've never had so many choices. Good Luck with your surgery and dont worry, everything will go well and you'll be glad that you did the surgery.

You'll be good to go.... My aunt had it due to the back problems and she's a wimp with pain and faired fine. Also, my best friend's sister (who has down's syndrome) did really well with pain & healing. You'll be touchy for about 2 weeks, but not totally out of commission. Remember, it's a fairly common procedure now a days and they give good drugs. :)

Yes there will be pain, it will lessen over about 2 weeks, and may continue as a dull pain after that, and can vary depending on person how long it lasts. You will definitely want to have plenty of ice packs at home, so that you can have one on each breast, and get a new one and put those in the freezer to get cool again. This will help with swelling and bruising. your doctor will give you some pain medication to help you the first week or so then probably tell you to start taking tylenol or advil as needed. You may find that wearing a traditional bra afterwards is painful, and may want to invest in a couple built in bra tanks, or maybe a sleeping bra that is not as rigid. Many women say that the pain after the surgery is not bad compared to the pain they had in the back, neck, shoulders from carrying too heavy breasts for so long. Good luck.

A friend of the family had one done 8 yrs ago. She has chronic back pain and decided to do the reduction, she is a plump woman all around and asked the Dr to make her smaller but somewhat in proportion to her body. She went from FF to a full B cup and is so happy. Her back/neck pain is gone and her initial recovery (feeling very uncomfortable) lasted about 2-3 days then it was just tender for about three weeks. Granted this was 8 yrs ago, so I am sure it has improved even more since then. I wish you the best and I'll say a prayer for you and a speedy recovery! You'll do great!!
