I bought my daughter one. All you need is WIFI connection. That's all.
Do you have to have some kind of service plan (like phone plan or internet service plan) to use it?
Or is it like an ipod, where you connect it to a source, like a computer, to download games and such?
I was considering getting my son one as a very special gift for our wedding day, but I don't want to have to buy anything more to use it (other than the potential cost of games to download)...
I know, sad that I don't know this, but do I? LOL
OK - I get it. That's what I thought - that it is basically like an ipod in that way (I do actually have one - lol), but I just wanted to make sure... THANKS!!!

The iPod Touch is like an iPod with the ability to connect to a wireless internet, if you have wireless internet in your home. If you don't have wireless internet in your home then it will just function like a regular iPod and play music, games and movies. You don't need to buy anything extra to get it to connect to your wireless internet.
The iPhone is a cellular phone and you need to buy phone service and a data plan.
as long as you have wireless internet in your house and you know the password- you can use it with no problems at all.
If you don't, you can just plug it into the computer for iTunes and download stuff that way.
Downloading most anything on the iPod does cost extra though- usually only $1 or so. But there are games that cost more ($5-10). Be careful how much access you give a kid because they are linked to a credit card.
If you have any serious questions about setting it up and keeping it so he can't buy things whenever he wants, you should go to an Apple Store or talk to the Geek Squad at a Best Buy.
Sorry to be so late on this one, but I saw your wedding post and scrolled back a few (Congrats on FINALLY getting through it, btw!) and came across this post about the ipod. In case you aren't aware, some of the games (even the free ones) can have what they call "in app purchases". Which is where you buy stuff inside the game (like extra tokens or whatever). There is a place in the "settings" of the ipod itself- I think it is in "authorizations" or something like that, where you can click (slide) to "de-authorize" in-app purchases. I highly recommend that you do so. I did it for both of our kids' ipod touches. Otherwise, you are likely to find some surprises on your cc bill (the one linked to your iTunes acct).
Congrats again on your happy wedding! Lots of memories makes for lots of love and laughs down the road. :)
