Sunscreen Recommendations

My daughter's 2 yr old has a very fair complexion, and bright blue eyes. She has been having trouble finding a sunscreen that doesn't cause blotches to appear on his face, and his eyes to get red and watery. Any suggestions?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for all your suggestions and recommendations. Some of them we'd already thought of and tried, and some of them we're planning on trying. All of my children had very fair complexions, too, but none of them were as sensitive to sunscreen as this little one is. We'll just keep experimenting until we find the right solution.

My daughter has very sensitive skin and uses Aveeno Baby for soap and lotion, recommended by her pediatrician. We don't have sunscreen problems (yet), but Aveeno does make a sunscreen, so that might be something to try.

After having had reactions (rashes and blotches) to the baby lines of Banana Boat, Coppertone and a store brand, we finally discoverd Aveeno for babies. It's sold at Walgreens and just happens to be on sale this week!
Good luck.

Have you tried Bullfrog? I think that is supposed to be great for kids and you can find just about anywhere...I think they even offer a face sunscreen.

my extremely fair complexion daughter has really sensitive excema prone skin. the only sunscreen that i've found i like, although not cheap, is kiehls Vital Sun Protection Lotion SPF 40. the only place i know for sure that sells it is neiman marcus. it is VERY waterproof. however, it doesn't clog her pores. they also have a daily lotion that has sunscreen in it that i like for me and will try on her this year on days we are just briefly in the sun.

I am very fair, have very sensitive skin and have had two "scary places" removed from my face and arm. After my surgery, my doctor had me start using Eucerin Protection Face Lotion. It is made to be a moisturizer and protectant, but is has 30 spf, so it provides that UVA/UVB protection as well. You can read about it at http://www.eucerinus.com/products/face_eplotion.html. He said to use in on every exposed part of my body: face, arms, legs, neck, etc.

It is the only product that hasn't clogged my pores, had a scent that troubled me, or irritated my skiin. You can get it at Walmart or any drug store, and it doesn't cost much.

I would either go to Whole Foods or the healthfood section at Kroger. They have sunscreen that has no chemicals in it! Earth's Best I believe is what I have.

Some people are allergic to aloe, so you might make sure she's not allergic to aloe.

In addition to whatever sunscreen she chooses, I'd also highly recommend a hat. I'm frequently teased about being the Hat Police, and it's rare to see my girls outside for more than a few minutes without one.

Some kids, it's really hard to keep a hat on them. I started out enforcing it at home. We'd be doing something way fun out in the back yard, and if she would insist on taking her hat off, we'd be done, and go inside. After a while, both of mine figured out that a hat was a requirement. Starting at home definitely makes it easier to enforce when you're away later, like at SeaWorld or the beach.

Good luck!

My kids all have very sensitive skin so I have to be careful about most products I purchase that they use on their skin.

I aksed my doctor what I could do about suncreens for the summer with this in mind and she told me to look for a sunscreed with Titanium Dioxide as it's active ingredient.

This is what they use for cancer patients to protect them from the sun after what they go through. It has worked well for my children. It's about the same price as most brands but not all have it...You will have to read the back of the product to find them. I have found that drugstores often offer a noname brand that uses Titanium Dioxide for the active ingredient and it's not too expensive...

Good Luck... ;-)

Hi,

I have very fair skin and have been extremely careful with my 2.5 year old son's skin. We are using neutrogena pure and free baby sunblock lotion spf 60+. It is hypoallergenic and has very few chemicals in it compared to other sunscreens. I love it. i even use it on myself as it does not cause my son or I to sweat once we put it on. It is a very light cream not goopy and lasts for hours. It has titanium an dzinc which woek wonders at blocking the harsh suns rays.

I hope this helps.

Look for one that has a physicalbarrier rather than a chemical one. Neutrogenia makes one.

I do not know enough about fair skinned sun screen, but do remind your daughter, not to put the sunscreen on his hands or lower parts of his arms.. Many children this age rub their faces and eyes and the sunscreen will get in their eyes and irritate them.

The other thing is for her to find a hat (baseball cap will work)for him. Get him used to wearing it, cause it will really help keep sun out of his face. Our daughter always wore a hat and sun glasses.. We let her pick them out herself... She would automatically put them on or remind us, if we did not put it on her on our way out the door...

I agree about the Coppertone Sport for the body, but someone also make a stick that looks like a glue stick. That might be Banana Boat? It goes on and stays put. Because of it's waxy base it doesn't run. My girls are VERY fair and this works very well for them. We apply all sunscreen on the hour when out in the sun as well as use the SPF sun shirts, but this sunblock stick works very well for faces and does not run into the eyes which really helps them be agreeable about applying it, even being willing to do it themselves. Good luck!

I would go with a more natural sunscreen without dyes, perfumes, etc. I like California Baby SPF 30 Sunblock Stick. It is really natural, and easy on skin. It also rates well on this website that tests products for safety and skin irritability : cosmeticsdatabase.org

Have you tried Burt's Bees all natural sunscreen? HEB has it. I limit my son's sun exposure, so have not tried it in prolonged direct sun, but so far so good!

If the generally available children's/baby's sunscreens are leaving a reaction on your grandaughter's skin, you might try going to a department store. It's more expensive, but Clinique makes a very gentle, high-SPF sunscreen that might help. I used it in junior high and high school when I had a skin allergy, compounded with being very fair. I've fortunately grown out of the allergy, so I now use regular baby sunscreen for myself, but the Clinique was helpful to me for about 5 years.

Have you tried HEB's baby sunscreen? We use the spray on my daughter and it works really well. We all have very sensitive skin and it doesn't bother any of us. Of course, make sure he doesn't rub his eyes with his hands as that could be his main culprit!

I fit your daughter's description and I have the same issues. Since I lifegaurded at 15 I have used Coppertone Sport, it's the one in the blue bottle. It is water proof and it is the ONLY one that doesn't run into my eyes when I sweat. Other than that Bullfrog is good but it will ruin a good pair of shades in a heartbeat, use it in a pinch but I rely on Coppertone SPORT.

Go with the gal below who offered to give you a sample of Arbonne. It's all natural and was the only thing my son could tolerate. Arbonne isn't sold in stores. It's a directly marketed product.

Waterbabies brand is made for kids & has at least 30 SPF. I'm sure it comes w/higher SPF but hadn't shopped for it lately so I can't really tell you anything else about it for the moment. I even use it myself sometimes if I can't find what I'm looking for. Good luck.

I am a redhead and my husband is blond. We both have pretty fair skin so naturally our children do too. I use Bananaboat Kids spray-on sunscreen for all four of my kids (ages 2 to 12). It goes on and dries quickly and doesn't have that greasy feel afterwards. Of course, you need to be careful about the eyes, especially in the first few seconds after applying. I also have my kids wear hats as often as possible.
