Sunscreen Issues - Erlanger,KY

My almost 3 year old loves playing outside and in the water. However, EVERY time I lather him up with sunscreen, he ends up rubbing his eyes and getting sunscreen in them. All summer we have fought with him about putting sunscreen on his face. When we finally convince him to let us put it on, he's outside for only a few minutes before he gets it in his eyes. I have tried baby and sport sunscreens and even looked for the face stick sunscreen at several stores, but I don't think they make it anymore. We are planning a trip to the beach soon and I'm not sure how we are going to deal! Please help!

What can I do next?

Water babies now has a tear free formula, I just bought it the other day because we were having the same problem. It is a little more expensive than the normal Water babies but well worth the money.

Neutrogena makes a face stick sunscreen for babies, and CVS offers a generic version of it. California Baby has one too... I've gotten it at Target before. You could probably find both kinds online if you have time to wait for shipping. Maybe drugstore.com? Good luck!

I have good luck with Aveeno spray lotion. My daughter is allergic to lots of them so if and when it does get in her eyes - it's quite the reaction, but not to this one. It will not feel good if it gets in his eyes, but it does seem to sink in quickly. Maybe have him wash his hands/wipe them to give the sunscreen sometime to sink in before he plays.

I have seen the face sticks and they also make tear free (which I had no luck with), but I usually just very carefully put whatever sunscreen I have on them. Don't put it on the face very thick and just make sure it is rubbed in well or use a towel and rub off excess. Actually, I use whatever is left on my hands after I rub it on their bodies and it seems to be enough as they have not been burnt. Another thought would be to put it on when you get them dressed so it is dry before they go outside. Even the water proof tends to run if not dry before they start sweating or playing in water. When reapplying just make it light and don't put it near the eyes.

My son does this all the time. We finally stopped putting sun screen on his hands and it seems to do the trick. I also watch him and distract him for about 5 min after I put the sun screen on his face to let it dry. Also found that the stick sun screen works better than the liquid stuff for the face.
Good luck!

Banana Boat makes the tear free kind as well. That's what we use on our little guy and he is constantly itching and rubbing his face. We've never had a problem with him getting it in his eyes!

You'll likely find a great variety of products once you get to the beach that may not be available at this point in the summer at your local stores.

We use the sprays on our kids faces (2 and 4). They have to wear sunscreen at day care, and the teachers have taught them to close their eyes - no problems with them freaking out.

Sticks are great as well......if you can find them.

Another product, if you're willing to spend the money, is vanicream. It's a thick lotion our dermatologist recommended. It's over the counter, but you may have to ask your pharmacy to order it in. They make several different strengths of sun screens as well (~$18), but really amazing products.

I have no vested interest in the company other than the lotion is what we use to help control our 2 year-old's eczema. Here's their website to see what products they have for your sunscreen needs, if interested:

I got the sunscreen stick at Target just the other day...I think they are popular tough, maybe just supply issues. Ask the pharmacist or someone if they are in stock. I even saw them at my local grocery store chain... Spray is good in that it doesn't smear & dries superfast. (Great for hands, will dry before he can rub his eyes.) But some of them are stinky when are in the process of spraying, and my kids won't let the spray near their face without going into dramatic, overdone gagging fits. That being said, spray and stick are all we use now (I have 3 boys, ages 2-7). And the regardless of the application type, I always buy the "baby" sunscreen (not the adult) and that probably helps w/the tears. Have a GREAT trip!! :)

I found a neurtrogena facestick at CVS early in the year. I think I have still seen them on shelves.

Let him pick out a very cool hat & just insist that he wears it AT ALL TIMES outside. It may not be as effective as the sunblock, but maybe you could put sunblock on some of his face, keeping away from the eyes. It is at least blocking the sun from his face! =)

I work through a food science company that also has healthy skincare -- and a sunblock. I think it may be helpful in your situation b/c it's a clear spray and absorbs into the skin immediately vs the creams that have to be rubbed in and run risk of getting on fingers etc.
If you're interested in checking it out, here's the link, then contact me at ____@____.com for me to help you order it: http://www.relivables.com/US/EN/Sunscreen.html

Hope you have a great trip no matter what!

Would it help to not apply sunscreen to his hands and make him keep sunglasses on? (good luck) I know you can buy a pair of sunglasses with the strap to help them stay on. Also wearing a hat (bucket style is better than baseball cap) will help. If those measures help, then you can just put a little bit on his nose & cheeks rather than covering his face with sunscreen. Have fun at the beach!

California Baby and Badger sunscreens both make a stick. You can find it on amazon.com if you can't find it locally.

I have seen & have bought the face stick sunscreen (I've usually seen it prepackaged with the larger bottle of regular sunscreen.

Can you use a ball cap, or hat with a chin strap (to help keep it on)? We use a cloth ball cap or "boat hat" a lot - they dry pretty fast if they get wet. We ordered a couple of hats through Dharma Trading co. - the Legionaire hat for babies and hat with the chin strap, for when we don't want to put sunscreen on our LO's face.

Go to Whole Foods and get the California Baby Sunblock Stick. It is SPF 30. Their lotion doesn't hurt baby eyes like most other sunscreens. And check this website out http://www.ewg.org/2010sunscreen/ They rate a bunch of sunscreens/sunblocks.

BTW, speaking from personal experience, I would use the stick at the beach because the sand sticks to the lotion and buffs it off. It was a sticky, sandy mess with sunscreen lotion. We used Badger. While has a good safety rating and smells like Fruit Loops, it attracts bugs and was the aforementioned sticky, sandy mess.

Blessings to you. Have safe travels.

They do still make the stick and that is what I use on my children. Otherwise their eyes get all red and swollen and it looks like they have pink eye. I believe it is a water babies brand. It is a little late in the season but have you tried Target or Walmart?

I buy all my baby/toddler products from drugstore.com/beauty.com. They have a 5% rebate and free shipping for $50+ purchases which makes it comparable to grocery store prices (at least where I live) and convenient since they deliver to my door.

I use both California Baby lotion and stick sunscreen and haven't had any issues but I don't put a lot on my DD hands.

Hi T.,

We use Sun Shades sunscreen. It is actually microfine zinc oxide that is clear. After about 10 minutes it has absorbed in the skin and really doesn't get on the hands the same way a lotion or oil would. It stays on for hours of swimming as well. I love it.

If you want any more information, let me know.
