"Sun Spots"

In the past few years I've begun to show brown spots on my face. Doctor says its the effect of sun exposure in earlier years. I have tried photofacials and microdermabrasion and neither has worked. Does anyone know of any products or home remedies that might help clear the spots.

Hey G.! I know of an eye cream that works REALLY well on sun spots and dark spots on the face. I have reccomended it to a few others with the same concern and it did wonders on their skin! It is eye cream, but it has kojic acid in it which acts as a lightening agent to rid dark circles, dark spots, ect. E-mail me if you are interested in trying a free sample. S. Hi G.-
My sister worked for a dermatologist and I needed something to lighten the dark spts I had on my ipper lip and underarms. She gave me samples of Lustra a Hydroquinone cream, gel, or solution. It worked wonders...that is what is for, lightening dark spots.
You have to buy it from a dermatologists office...

They are spots from sun over-exposure. I've had the same since my late 20's. They happen more on the left side of the face, hand and arm because it's the "driving" side. Living in So Cal, you almost can't avoid it. I use a good quality, but natural, Vitamin C cream. It's called DermaE and I get it at Whole Foods.

I have just started using some natural products from www.katuri.com and am happy with them so far. They just sent me a free sample (with my order) of a product called "Porcelain Doll" that is supposed to be anti-aging.

Here is what the description:

Porcelain Doll

Works like Botox-in-a-Bottle, well, it takes some applications, about 1 bottle to make an eye-opening difference.

A Light, easily-absorbed, high-intensity serum-like formulation takes 10 years off your face. They will lift, firm, smooth, reduce wrinkles, folds, reduce efects of gravity, environment and aging.

Smoothes Wrinkle-prone skin, can be used as a smoothing, light moisturizer under makeup, but give about a 10-15 minutes for the oils to sink in before makeup. Sample size is a 5ml and lasts for 12-15 applications.

Works rapidly to intensely firm to give it an almost porcelain-like finish, smooth and firm. Excellent for those who are losing or lost weight to tone sagging jowls and lift up the face. Changes sagging or overblown facial contours, by firming skin and muscleslifts up and smoothes forehead wrinkles and double chins

It also reduces wrinkles & crowsfeet and clarifies skin.

Uses the highly prized, newly researched Orchid Extract used in high end cosmetics for ability to fight free radicals and protect from effects of pollution, cell regenerating Natural Vitamin E, and sebum-like Macadamia Nut oil and Shea Oil with its many moisturizing benefits.

Texture of skin begins to change from the first application.
Apply just a few precious drops overnight or under makeup and see a dramatic difference within a week. 1oz will last about 3-4 weeks.

Ingredients Macadamia nut oil, Shea oil, Cherry Kernel oil, Evening Primrose oil, Orchid Extract, Natural Vitamin E

G., I have the same problem, it's called Melasma, it has gotten worse while I'm pregnant (pregnancy mask). In the past I have used Obagi, it works, but it you are exposed to sun the spots will return. I have tried so many products and procedures including Microdermabrasion which does not work, and laser which is expensive and does not work. Recently I found this product which is inexpensive, but I have to wait until after I have the baby. Check it out, it's a papaya based soap.

I have a few of these too, and the only thing that worked was going to the dermatologist and asking for the laser called "Aura". There may be others out there that work as well. Hi G.,

Growing up in Southern California and baking myself at the beach throughout my teen age years and acne in my early 20's my skin was not very smooth.

I started using a skin care line that has therapeutic essential oils in it. The reason I started is that the two oils in the night and day creams have been researched to be effective against cancer and given my sun exposure and that my father developed skin cancer I thought I had better find something to protect myself.

I was surprised to notice that it look the dark circles out from under my eyes, healed the acne scaring and made my skin more smooth, less blotchy. Someone told me it helps with liver spots too (I don't have that).

The kit is not too expensive because it lasts me 3 months and I like that it doesn't have any toxic preservatives or petroleum by products which can result in allergies and other issues.

You can get it at www.EOlady.com search for ART

Let me know if you decide to try how you like it.

M.

Hi G.,

Have you seen a Derm. or general M.D. ? I would get a second opinion just to be on the safe side. It sounds like something my best friend went through recently, and she had to have the spots "frozen" off of her skin after time went by and the creams weren't helping. I'm sure you have already heard all of this, but just thought maybe you should see a dermatologist.

Best too you!

Is this dr. a dermotologist? Those brown spots sound like they are liver spots. This comes for toxcity of the liver. . the sun does, however darken them, just like freckels. Always wear sun block, and I would recommend seeing a dermotologist. Health foods store will have suppliments for liver function. It may not clear up the current problum, but it can help prevent further damage to the skin. Good luck to you. Have a wonderful weekend, M. Benavides

Photofacials and micodermabrasion are fine temporily, but no matter what you do nothing will work %100. Your spots will be lighter, however, you MUST always wear a Sunscreen! This is what I do and my spots are so much lighter and I have NOT had the proceedures you have had. I use the Arbonne Re9 Anti-aging line,(their eye cream has a dual use to lighten, so I also use it to spot treat). I apply Arbonne Face and Body Sunscreen of SPF 16 before my Re9 Day cream that has a SPF of 8. My foundation I use to conceal my spots is the Arbonne Mineral Powder SPF 15. The coverage is the best I have found without feeling like you have a ton of makeup on! check out www.joannmalony.myarbonne.com for more information. If you are interested call me at ###-###-#### mention Mamasource and you will recieve it at cost!! I know how embarassing they can be, this is what go me hooked!

I used to have a lot of sun spots on my face too. I went to see Dr. Marquina at Skin Suave and she prescribed tretinoin cream, as well as a hydroquinone 4% cream to lighten up the sun spots. After a few weeks, my sun spots lightened up a lot and then Dr. Marquina zapped each of my sun spots off my face. It's called skin tag removal. More info can be found at www.skinsuave.com. I know Inglewood might be a little far, but you won't have to pay Beverly Hills prices. And it's worth it! Also, you need to always wear a hat during the day to prevent from getting more sun spots. And wear sunscreen on your face with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide every day. If you're going to be outdoors for awhile, you need to re-apply sunscreen on your face every two hours. Hope this info helps!

My name is B. and I am an esthetician in Woodland Hills. Are you wearing a good sunscreen? That is sooo important and also putting a lightener on the brown spots.
Because if you didn't your skin is more sensitive to the sun and receive more brown spots.
Then you might need more microdermabrasion treatments or a light peel. Talk to your esthetician or dermatologist.

That was just two days before my Back to School Night presentation for the school year! It looked pretty gross! But it is gone. In truth it took X amount of years to appear on your face it's going to take time a treatment to get rid of and even then it might not go away completly. There are no home remedies or over the counter products that's truely make a difference so don't waist your money. With out actually seeing you it's hard to say what's best for your skin. There's a couple of routes. There are professional peels over time will help. There's invasive as well as non-invasive. There are laser's out there that can target the spot and get rid of it. It'll take more than one treatment. Depending on the laser there's little to no discomfort. There's a topical product with hydroquinone, must be rx strength. There are a lot of cosmetic dermatologist in the desert. Most of them give free consultations. To name a couple The Medical & Skin Spa or the La Quinta Med Spa. Go have a free consult and see what your options are.

I also got these from hormones in birth control. The best thing is slow process of topical cream with hydroquinin with a min 2%.... you can pick up this topical cream for only $5 at walmart (fading cream) make sure it comes with a sunscreen (which it does) or you can buy it from a Dermatologist (4%/it's stronger) for around $60.... it becomes a daily regimen day and night, but it does work, my spots are way lighter.

Hi G.,
Are you on hormone replacement or the pill? Exposure to estrogen (like the pill or pregnancy) can cause this too. Creams with licorice root in them are supposed to help. Keep your face out of the sun. The sun brings on the melasma and it is caused by estrogen.

answers from San Diego on

Hi G.,

This info. may be a bit over whelming, but I think it may help answer your question. This was recently sent to me and I have come across these issues. This is told by a Health Nutritionist who is giving advice to another women with the same question you have. It's seriously worth reading.

The first thing that comes to my mind is what is called Age Spots or Liver Spots. According to Dr. James Balch MD and author of “Prescription for Nutritional Healing” they are flat brown spots that can appear anywhere on the body as it ages. Most age/liver spots appear on the face, neck and hands. These brown spots in themselves are harmless, but they can be a sign of more serious underlying problems. They are the result of a buildup of wastes known as lipofuscin accumulation, a byproduct of free radical damage in skin cells.

These spots are actually signs that the cells are full of the type of accumulated wastes that slowly destroy the body’s cells, including brain and liver cells. In other words, they are a surface sign of free radical intoxication of the body.

Factors that lead to the formation of age spots include poor diet, lack of exercise, poor liver function, the ingestion of oxidized oils over a period of time, and above all, excessive sun exposure. Exposure to the sun causes the development of free radicals that damage the skin. Most people who have significant numbers of age spots have lived in sunny climates or otherwise had excessive sun exposure.

I suggest you get on a good eating plan that balances out your body acid/alkaline plus drink Arbonne's Detox tea 2-4 times a day to cleanse the liver and kidneys, Resist for the Omega 3’s plus the anti aging antioxidant properties of the Lipoic Acid and CoQ10 that are in the product. I would also suggest you do the Arbonne 7 Day Body Cleanse (do this one week every month for 12 months J) along with using the Arbonne SeaSource Spa Soak and products the entire week. If you don’t know where to start with an eating plan check out www.glowinginsideandout.com I’m personally fond of this program J))))) Don’t forget to take your Hybrids daily and drink good clean water (Reverse Osmosis or Steam Distilled Water) The Arbonne Fizzy Tabs are an excellent way to bathe your cells in the much needed B vitamins and the Rhodalia herb in the product is an adaptogen which will help your immune system stay healthy. Remember your skin is a direct reflection of what is happening internally.

I hope I haven’t overwhelmed you but felt this information may be of help to you. Thanks for trusting me with your concerns. Regarding the cleansing effect of the 7 Day cleanse…it works gently and not like a “Colon Blow” if you know what I mean. Don’t let the gentleness fool you…it is cleansing deeply into the tissues of the body. I’m very impressed with the formulation.

Thank you so much for your response. I very much appreciate you taking the time to respond. I do all of the suggestions you have mentioned. We rarely eat out /fast food and I actually cook..novel idea in our culture it seems! I am as regular as one could possibly be and we even have a reverse osmosis water system...hybrids daily with Resist, I am thin and in good shape...but light hair and eyes and light skin...but my skin can get very dark...( I am blessed with skin that tans and rearely burns) this must be the problem. I work in my yard a lot..I call it therapy...for free...we do work with a lot of women in our Arbonne business...so... sometimes more therapy is needed so my yard is the source of cleasning my mind! (HA HA)

I thought for sure this browning spots were due to hormones...no? I am so sorry to be a pest but I trust your judgment. I want to be sure that the progesterone cream will not add to the brown coloring.

Thanks again!!

Kristin

*************************************************************

Kristin,

I checked in Christine Northrup MD book “The Wisdom of Menopause” under skin and hormones. She states that research has shown that topical application of estrogen can increase collagen thickness, decrease pore size, and help the skin hold moisture. In Europe, estrogen is often prescribed to help beautify the skin. You can get these same benefits by using hormones topically. She goes on to say TOPICAL PROGESTERONE: Many of my patients have seen skin improvement, including decreased midlife acne, greater moisture, and fading of age spots, by using a 2 percent natural progesterone cream on their skin. This may be all you need without resorting to a prescription for estrogen cream.

I hope this helps?

Hi G..

Sun damage runs deep into the dermal layers of the skin and is very challenging to remove with topical preparations or therapies. Sun damage also darkens with age.

Dermabrasion is very harsh on the skin. Laser treatment can cause scaring. I don't know how you feel about toxins, but chemical peels will remove much of the epidermal skin layers. I really don't recommend them highly. Chemical peels are just that - chemical. Harsh, oftentimes toxic, chemicals are brushed onto the skin and literally burn the layers off. The underlying skin is very touch/environment sensitive, also highly photosensitive. More damage usually occurs to the skin after a peel as healing time requires a month or two of absolutely NO UV exposure - and how many people really have time for that? Most people do more damage after a peel by not using adaquate sunscreen for extended periods of time. All in all - the best approach is always a natural one.

I have been an aromatherapist for over 15 years, healing everything from 3rd degree burns, psoriasis and acne to sun damage, rosacea and wrinkling. Using myself (now 45) as a human guinea pig, and about 22 other people in cliinical trials at the moment, I have been able to erase a lot of the sun damage and broken capillaries on my face with botanical essential oils and plant oils. My skin is also firmer and more even toned.

Having had such great results, I decided it was time to share my products with others. I have developed a line of 100% pure botanical skincare that erases time, sundamage, clears acne, and overall creates healthy rejuvenated skin.

I would like to share these products and information with you. Though in the infancy stage with my company, I have made a little website on myspace you can go to until the graphic designer has completed the main site. Here you will find information on my products, and an overview on toxic chemicals in retail skincare.

You can always e-mail me at: ____@____.com if you want to talk or have any questions. Thanks G.. I look forward to assisting you with your situation.

I have the same problem ... and I'm only 35! My brown spots have gotten worse over the years ... boy, do I regret all those years of basking in the sun w/o sunscreen (spots got even darker w/ pregnancy)! Anyway, I've tried IPL treatments and various creams like tri-luma. Both worked ... temporarily. The spots came back. Someone recently recommended Obaji products which I heard works wonders ... although, the process causes redness in your skin and dryness. If you can afford the "down time" , this might be a good alternative for you.

There is a treatment that is supposed to help with that. It's IPL. Im not sure what it stands for but it is a light treatment and my dermatologist has a laser center that offers this. It costs about 350 per treatment and sometimes you can see a dramatic change after the first one. My sister in law had it done and she said she had two treatments but only needed one. They will tell you that you may need 6 but I would wait and see what the results are. The light pulls up all the dark spots and for a few days you may have "peppering" little dark dot where it is working but make up covers it. I had it done for rosacea but it also pulled a lot of the sun damage spots off my face. Always wear sunscreen and wear hats.

I know you've heard a lot of conflicting info, but the sad truth is your doctor is correct--they're from the sun. See a dermatologist---these can be removed. I have several friends who had them removed successfully. One through a dermatologist, and another went to an aesthetician (sp?) and within 3-4 mos. of regular facials, they were all gone. She is religious w/sunscreen and a hat, since she was told they'll come back w/sun exposure. It's been over a year now and her face still looks great. No matter what you eat, if you have years of unprotected skin in the sun, you will get the brown spots. And the first place they usually show up is our left side, like another poster said. Years of driving in the car in So Cal's sun!

So I went on the OBAGI-C RX SYSTEM. It is quite expensive about $279 for the starter kit. I have been using it for about 2 months now and still using same products so they last awhile. My spots are almost compeletely gone. They started to fade after about 3 weeks on the program. You do need kind of like a prescription for it, I got mine from a Medical Spa. But, you can buy it online too. You can go to Obagi.com to find out more information. There is another Obagi line that is called NU Skin I believe. That one is much stronger and you peel for a long time. The RX-C is more gentle, I did have some redness to start but it went away after a few days. Good Luck.

The most effective way to remove them is with chemical peels. I've seen it work well on my friends. Once I'm finished with babies and nursing, I'll be doing some chemical peels.
I've had some mild ones and they can be painful, but the results I've seen on my friends has been amazing.
good luck

You can take a little turmeric powder and add a few drops of lime juice. Apply this on the darkened area. This would help to reduce tan effectively.
Dry some orange peels. Then, mix them to a bowl of curd. This would be beneficial in removing tan. Keep this for about 15 minutes and wash off with cold water.

Are you located in Orange county, CA by any chance? If so I highly recommend Pacific Acne centers. They have done an amazing job not only on sunspots but fine lines as well.
