Sun Allergy?

My 2 yr old son has started breaking out when we are in the sun for prolonged periods of time. It started in March with a vacation to FL. we had went to the beach, my husband forgot the sunscreen so we figured we would just stay a short time and then I looked at Sam and he was covered with a Red Rash, we left immediately and went to the hotel gave him some benedryl and he slept and was fine the next day so I blamed it on sand and wind. Well the last couple of times we have went to the zoo he has done the same thing it starts out and looks like a small bug bite and spreads to cheeks down the arms than to his torso. There is no way to let the Dr. look at it because it clears up overnight. Any ideas? Has anyone else dealt with this problem? Thanks for the help!

So What Happened?

We saw the Dr. yesterday w/ really not a lot of answers. She wants me to take a pic of the rash next time it happens and make sure I coat him w/ a good sunscreen w/ high SPF and I believe zinc in it, making sure I apply it an hr. before we go out to let it soak in. Thanks for all the advice and help! I love this webgroup and am so glad I found you all. Have a great weekend.

I agree with what others have said. Just want to add that my Mom developed sun allergy/poison at different times in her life. In other words, she used to be able to get out in the sun just fine...then one year she got the rash symptoms. Just because he might get it one year and not the next, doesn't meant it isn's sun poisoning. Just something to keep in mind.

This sounds like what both my boys and myself have. When we go on vacations, one or all of us will break out into red rashy hive looking things after spending too much time in the sun. I don't know for sure about your, but ours is more of a heat rash, coupled with the wrong types of sunscreen. I tried multiple kinds on myself, before I even had kids. Finally I found a kind that was all organic-natural. That has helped me immensely. Then my boys each came along and they both have a tendency to get it too. I just try to keep them shaded as much as possible, or at least in the water if they are in the sun. The combination of water and shade helps. If they have to be in the direct sunlight, I try to keep them with shorts and tshirt and just put a very minimal amount of sunscreen on them. Since their faces get it first, I try to just put a dab on their cheeks, nose and ears - but mostly shade their faces with a large-rimmed fishing hat. Benedryl also helps us though, because it calms down the rash, as well as cool baths and clear colored aloe gel (not aloe based lotions or colored aloe gels).

I also found out that my father had this quite a bit when he was younger and still breaks out with it if he is outside for prolonged periods of time with suntan lotion on (ie -- by the pool on vacation TRYING to get a tan). It seems the combination of heat, sun and most lotions causes our family to break out in rashes. FUN, FUN.

I hope this helps - if not, I hope you find a cause and cure quickly. Kids love sun - its hard to keep them inside, isn't it? :) Best wishes, B.

My son who just turned two has a similar experience, and we just took him to the dermatologist last week. She was able to identify the problem and give us some suggestions. His was an allergy. Although he did not have the rash when we went in she was able to tell from testing other things what the issues was. It is really nice to know not. I would suggest taking him to a dermatologist.

I would suggest taking some pictures of the rash when and if it happens again. I would also still mention it to the doctor. If the doc can at least see pictures it will help with a diagnosis. I would make sure to put some high number sunscreen on him anytime he is in the sun.

Hello! Just wanted to say I developed a sun sensitivity 10 years ago. The only way I avoid it is by putting on a strong SPF before going out. I only get the red bumps on my arms and they take a few days to go away. If I put on SPF, I don't get it at all. He might be getting a heat rash and is too hot. My Sam gets a heat rash if his clothing is too heavy or when he is in the carseat (too much padding and not enough air)

You might want to call your Ped. and see what he/she thinks...I'd mention that the rash goes away so you'd rather not bring him in especially with flu season starting. Plus it'll save you money!
Good Luck!

Actually I had a neighbor that I babysat for their daughter. She was literally alergic to the sun. She had to be covered from head to toe whenever she went outside. And it had to be an abosolute necessity. It was so sad cause she could never go and play outside or go to the park like she wished. She was actually as i recall alergic to some vitamin, not d, that the sun uses in our bodies. So go and get your child checked out. If you want more info contact me and I'll see if I can find the mom.

It sounds like a sun allergy...

I've had severe allergies my whole life and just in the last 10 years developed a sun allergy...sounds like he's exhibiting the same symptoms I get. Sounds like he's getting hives.

I always get this the first few times I'm out in the sun for an extended period of time after having NOT been for awhile. Occasionally it will be bad enough to develop in sun poisoning. When he starts exhibiting symptoms, the best thing you can do for him is rub him down with benadryl cream or Hydrocortisone...

He definitely needs to see a pediatrician in RE: to this issue. If your pediatrician doesn't feel like he can make a decent diagnosis without seeing it, force it then rush in and see the ped. But I would definitely recommend you make an appt with his pediatrician - if only to get a referral to a pediatric allergist.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Sounds like a sun allergy to me, and with his soft sensitive skin, it makes sense. I used to be a sun bather, and do fake baking, and one time I got a red rash on my chest when I burnt a little, and ever since that day, I cannot be in the sun w/o a very strong sunscreen, and couldn't even think about getting back in a tanning bed! On my left arm that's exposed to the sun while I'm driving, I always have a red rash on it. The rash always hurts, and has started to leave some permanent discoloration on my skin when the rash goes away. My daughter wants me to visit her in Arizona, but can you imagine?

My daughter has the opposite allergy, she is allergic to the cold. It's called cold induced urticara or cold induced hives.

I would take your son in to your pediatrician for proper diagnosis and then go from there. It's a tough allergy but lifestyle modifications make it easier to live with!

Good luck, I hope you find out what is making your poor boy miserable!

Ok to start mom mother has this and i grew up with her in this condition. How does he react towards dairy? Can he eat cheese, drink ,milk, eat eggs, ect? My mom is allergic to the sun and if she is in it at all she will break out and it will itch real bad and also hurt if she scratches it too much. She is allergic to Dairy products and that is what caused her problem. When u do not consume dairy ur body is not getting enough nutrients to protect u from the sun. His condition will get worse over time unless he grows out of it. Sun screen adventually will do no good at all and he will have to stay out of the sun. if he does go in the sun he will have to wear long sleeved clothes, hats, and pants. You need to go get him tested at a doctor for allergies they will scratch his back. It will tell you what he is allergic to. My 5 year old daughter had to be tested because ours is hereditary. she came up positive for dairy and from age 2 to 5 she could not consume dairy or go into the sun but fortunatley she grew out of it and can eat dairy and goe into the sun now. The doctor says it can come back later in life since it is in the blood of uor family. I have information on this stuff so if you would like more than email me at ____@____.com and ill help you as much as i can. But he does need to be tested and tell the doctor he is breaking out bad when i the sun when your there too. It will help them on looking for the right thing.

I am going to say you probably have the same problem that I have with my daughter. My daughter has hives. I have heard that sometimes the sun can cause hives. They do start out small and spread rather rapidly. If the more you keep him out of the sun the better, I am almost guessing that is the problem.

Good Luck

I actually had a very similar experience that started in FL as well when we were on vacation. My doctor recommended the sunscreen namebrand bull frog, they have one for kids, because it is a heavier sunscreen. Also we apply it 1/2 hour before going out in the sun so it has a chance to aborb in. This has worked so far for us. Hope this helps some.

it could be a sun allergy but also my son had similar symptoms and his was only heat rash IE why it would clear up so quickly.
I thought the same thing cause my mom is allergic to the sun. Ours is not hereditary. However as i have gotten older i have developed a reaction to the sun if out in it for long perioods. But my son when i noticed it i thought OH NO> Ha dhim checked and it was heat rash. so i would see if its the sun itself or from being too hot also. Cause my son breaks out if he is in to many layers. he is 3 now and still has a problem but it doesnt only happen in the sun so i would look and see if there are any other triggers that cause the same thing. Definatly talk to his ped.
I hope i helped some.
