Summer Wedding Advice

My BIL is getting married this summer, and they are having and outdoor ceremony at his finacee's parents home - with cake and champagne afterwards (mid-afternoon wedding time). Then, a formal reception with a dinner at, from what I gather, a pretty fancy restaurant later in the evening. I am at a loss as to what to wear. Do I need to get 2 dresses to wear since the 2 venues are so different? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

Will you have time to do a full change between events? If yes, and budget is not an issue, go with two different dresses. How fun!

I would wear two different dresses! Depending on how much time there is between the two events. Why not? Your daytime look could be a nice floral print or pastel colored dress with clean and fresh make-up. Then for your evening look, a darker cocktail dress or even a longer slinky gown. Add a few more layers of mascara and a bold lip and voila!

I like the idea of one dress with different accessories. What about a vintage-looking tea length dress in a large black & white pattern? You could wear your hair down under a beautiful hat, flats and a cardigan to the wedding, and then pull your hair back in a French twist, and wear some rhinestones and heels for dinner.

I would buy one dress that can be dressed up or down.

It sounds like the wedding is informal so you could wear the dress with some flat sandals and some bangal bracelts. For the more formal dinner at night put on some pretty heels and a necklace along with the bangals.

There you go, two outfits out of one! Most of all have fun.

Hi J.,

Two dresses would probably be appropriate and also practical as well. Outdoor summer weddings can get hot and sticky and you might want to freshen up between venues. Afternoon would call for tea length and I would suggest a Laura Ashley type cotton because it's outside. With a formal reception I would go with a dressy dress, all dolled up with accessories.

My two cents!

I would go with two different dresses. I would suggest that get two dresses that you can wear with the same jewelry, handbag and shoes. That way all you will have to change is the dress and also personally I end up spending more on the accessories than the dress anyways. Also, since the dress is different it will look like a totally different ensemble both times.

Well, this is tough but I recommend two dresses as well, and not just because it would super fun to wear two outfits! ;) I actually would worry that the first outfit might get smelly and sweat stained. You didn't say when the wedding was (month wise) but it's getting pretty warm, even into the evenings and I know if I were outside I'd be kinda icky to go straight to a formal event.

Plus, it might be nice to change clothes and feel refreshed for round 2!

I'd say go with whatever you're most comfortable in doing. I dont' think there's anything wrong etiquette-wise with wearing the same dress all day. It sounds like they're diong the cake & champagne portion simply because the wedding is being held early in the day (too early for a dinner reception). If it's very hot, you may want to consider 2 dresses only for comfort (a lighter, summer dress for the ceremony outside and a heavier dress for the reception since it'll be cooler with A/C indoors). But, honestly, go with personal preference. If you really WANT 2 different looks, I think there are a lot of good suggestions below.

Well it's kinda up to you. You could get a little cocktail type dress and just change your accessories to make it work for both. Like for the wedding where flats and small/light jewelry. Then for the dinner put on heels, maybe a big necklace possibly pull your hair up etc. Or you could do two completely different dresses. Again I would do like a more summery dress for day.....maybe in a yellow or pink. Then for the evening wear a little Black dress.

If it were held here, you would have to have two dresses. It is just too darn hot to go to one event outside in the afternoon heat and be able to wear the same outfit that same evening..

i would ask them.... see if the wedding it self is going to be unformal.. and see if the other will be formal. I would see about getting a dress that you can add stuff to for the night... like a beautiful shawl or short sweater with sequins... good luck you can also buy a dress... wear low shoes or pretty sandals during the day.. and put heels on for the night..

No. Unless the bride is getting two dresses, lol. The difference between afternoon and evening formal wear is often subtle, like dark and long for evening and short or bright for afternoon - yet both occasions have the same styles of dress and fabrics. So I'd go with a darker short dress that would work at either place. But honestly, don't sweat it, find something that looks nice on you and you'll be comfortable the whole day. :)

I think one dress is plenty. I don't think anyone expects you to have 2 dresses , but I have heard of people doing that...the bride as well. Oh my! You might take a shawl for the evening part.
