I had my second son on March 21. I am a teacher on leave until next fall. I am still bringing my 2.5 year old DS to daycare (his grandma) now but will keep him home over my normal summer break, June -Aug. How do I get out and about with a baby who sleeps so much and cannot be in the sun? Help!

1. Leave baby in the pumpkin/carseat with the shade over him. You can go anywhere/anytime of the day.
2. Take a stroller and put baby in that (in the pumpkin seat). That way you are not lugging around a baby and holding the hands of a toddler!
3. Get a sling and wear baby so you can take your 2.5 year old outdoors, to the park, etc.
4. Go out only in the mornings or evenings when the sun is not as strong if you are just going to be holding baby.
5. By June, your baby should be able to sit in a bumbo (or maybe July). Get one and take it with you but be sure to keep a hat on the baby.
6. Ask your mom to watch your youngest a few hours each week so you and your son will have some alone time! Do something you can't do with a baby - go swimming, go to the library, etc.

Good luck and congrats on your new addition!

Congratulations on your baby!

My second baby, by virtue of things happening in life that couldn't be avoided such as a death in the family, was out and on the go from the beginning. When my mother in law passed away, we had to travel out of town to handle all the arragements and it was hotter than blazes. At 3 months we travelled again for a wedding. Again, hotter than blazes. My mom went with me to help out that time.
Situations present themselves and you just seem to figure them out so I know you will be fine and find what works for you.
My daughter was older so my son just got used to going places and as a result, he's such a good traveller and was always quite mellow about it.
That kid could sleep anywhere!

I wish you the best!

i had my daughter 3-13-09 and she was outside all summer long, i bought water babies lotion to put on her and we have a tent thing up in our yard and had her in her swing out there and put her in the pool every once in a while she loved it, you just have to make sure you have a bottle of water with you to give her so she does not get dehydtrated and yes she can drink water.

I will be going through this this summer too, but it sounds like grandma might be available to accompany you? You should be able to find ways to keep the baby shaded and able to sleep (stroller, etc.), and if grandma can watch the baby or chase after your older son, it should allow everyone to get out....I wish I had a grandma close by too.

I always took both of my kids outside as infants - I just made sure they were appropriately clothed (sun hats, etc). The vitamin D is important for them, and at 6 months, you can begin to use sunscreen on your infant.

I was on maternity leave at this time 2 years ago with a 22 month old and a newborn, and we'd make sure to have her in a stroller with a shade, a hat and a blanket as needed.
