Hi Everyone! My 10-mo-old daughter has a cold--nothing serious, but stuffy/runny nose, congestion, slight cough, low-grade fever, some trouble sleeping. I know it has to run its course, but naturally she's uncomfortable and a bit fussy. For those of you with experience with this, do you have any natural/home remedies or suggestions that might make her more comfortable until it passes? TIA!

What can I do next?

I am so sorry that you are dealing with this. That is not fun for baby or Mommy. My daughter dealt with frequent colds etc for a while and after some other things I have sought advice from nutritionist and natural doctors. They both reccomended some things that have helped us. The last time my daughter has been sick was this past summer. Please contact me privately and I would be happy to talk to you about some of the things that we do. One thing to also do while she has a cold is to cut out milk products. I hope she gets better soon!

I swear by saline nasal spray. Little Noses (non-medicated) can be picked up ar Wal-Mart and most grocery stores.
If the nose is really stuffy, I'll set my kitchen timer and spray my kiddos every 30 minutes. If you still have that Turkey Baster nose sucker thing you got in the hospital when your child was born - use that to aspirate her nose after a few sprays.
Beware if you've never done this before. I was out and out SHOCKED at the 'output' the first time I did this with my first child. (I now have three)
We've done the Vicks on the feet with socks and that seems to help.
a little tylenol rotated with advil or Motrin every four hours is great for the fever and the crankies.
And lots of TLC.

Hang in there!

I use:
*Musinex with my kids even at that age. It is wonderful and will help keep all the mucus loose and from hopefully getting infected.
*A vaporizer will keep her room more humid and help her heal faster.
*We have used the vicks chest rub stuff, but we put it on the bottoms of their feet. This has helped the coughs.
*We also propped the beds up on one end so they would stay elevated...(if she is in a crib, just roll a towel or blanket and put under one end of the mattress)

Hi there, M.! One thing that we always did when our kids were little was to bring their car seat into the house and let them sleep in there. Once they got a bit older, we would elevate the head of their crib so that they would not get so clogged while they slept.

Hope she is better soon!

Hi M.,

I am so sorry your having to deal with this nasty cold/flu stuff. I myself have the flu and its no fun. The best advice I can give you is to cake your little ones feet with baby vicks vapor rub and cover with socks. It really works. Try it. I do it at bedtime to give her nighttime relief. You can also do it for yourself. Good luck!!

Hello M.,

go to sprouts or whole foods. they have many alternative products to choose from and their staff is very helpful. the saline solution is pretty good and also boost vitamin c intake. Anise tea is a nice expectorant.

one book I highly recommend:
Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child
it's a great reference book. they have it at sprouts and whole foods. you may be able to find it cheaper at amazon.com

here is the link in amazon
http://www.amazon.com/Smart-Medicine-Healthier-Child-Jane...

Written by a natural-medicine practitioner, a traditionally licensed doctor, and a pediatric nurse, Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child presents an integrated approach to children's health care that allows a parent to do just that. This excellent reference applies a full spectrum of responses to common childhood health problems: conventional medical treatments, dietary guidelines, nutritional supplements, herbal treatments, homeopathy, and acupressure; for each ailment, general recommendations and preventive measures are also offered. The book's authors explain that their approach to health care "considers all treatment possibilities and draws on what works. Sometimes this will be an herb, sometimes an antibiotic, sometimes both." This well-researched, balanced, and clearly written reference belongs on every parent's bookshelf

Hi M.~

Great advice given so far. I would also add that when my little one has a little cold or a stuffy/runny nose we use "Johnson's Soothing Vapor Bath" w/great results(available at the food store, walmart, target...whereever). It has menthol in it and really seems to give her relief. You just put a little bit into her bath-very simple.

Hope your little one is feeling better soon.
