Next month my husband and I will be taking our soon to be 10-month-old son to Florida. I am looking for recommendations on floatation devices for the pool. I've seen a few on One Step Ahead.com and others but wanted to see what others have had luck with.

What can I do next?

Baby Spring Float with Canopy by: Swimways is the best! It packs up flat, is reasonably priced and has a canopy! I also like how it enables the baby to be "in" the water, yet completely safe!

ok, so i realise that your son is a little young, but the YMCA has a really cheap flotation device that has worked well with my 4 year old since he was very little. I believe it cost us $11 and you can take the foam floaties off as he gets better in the water. i would imagine that you would have him in the kiddie pool most of the time anyway and won't need a big floatie. Have a wonderful vacation!

My son is also 10 months, but got in the pool for the first time in Sep. At Bj's, we found a wet suit with a built in floating device. It covers the arms and legs so you're son will be protected from the sun too. The entire chest and back have the floating device and it comes in different sizes. It's sooo cute!

We have a pool and 2 children so we have tried many. Aqua swim has a great tube that blows up like a bicycle tire and has the nylon suit attached to it. We loved that and use it alot. I have seen it at Wal-mart and even at the grocery store. However, I am concerned 10 months might be too young for that. So I would reccomend a boat. You need to find one that has really good support at the bottom, so he dosen't slip right through. And also you need to find a really substansial one, so it will not tip over. I was looking around for myself on e-bay and I came across one I was thinking of trying. It looks safe and secure. I will put the link for it below. You will probably find however, he wants to be just with mommy in the pool and will hate the boat. I would go without one, and if you feel the need to buy one when you are there. Save on some packing, also there are wal-marts every where. Good luck and have a great vacation. Bring us all back some rest and relaxation please. :-)
~PS~ Here is the link to the one I saw on e-bay. It is called "baby spring float pool bouy" it says it is for 9-24 months. The only think I don't like about it is that it does not provide sun protection. But, we use alot of sunscreen and hats at our house. Canopy type boats tend to scare our little ones. Good luck, copy and paste below into your browser.

We always had luck with the floatation devices that look like one piece swim suits. They wear them and have much more freedom of movement when they are in the pool or ocean with you. One other thing, some beaches don't permit floats that are vinyl, they require that they be canvas or foam in case of sharp objects that can puncture them. Just check with them first.

My son has been using a Speedo swim vest for the last 6 months or so. He been taking classes at the Y forever, but their bubbles didn't hold him up (his bottom half floats too much and he kept going face first in the water). When we realized how much swimming he would do this summer with our family trip to FL and all, I looked into something new. I know he's older than your son (he's 2.5), but I just started letting one of the little guys in the baby swim class I teach use this vest and it's working really well for him.

The reason why I like this 1 over the other things I saw was ease of use -- it quickly zips on and the strap that goes between his legs really holds it in place. Let me tell you, it has been wonderful! Once I realized the trick was to make the strap nice and tight he was off and swimming!

I hope this helps and have fun on your trip.

Hi! I used the baby spring float with a canopy for my daughter last summer. It worked wonderfully. Two small chambers that took no time to blow up.The canopy comes off and both the float and canopy fold up into a small circle so great for car packing! You can do a search and find them on the internet. I got mine at Babies R Us last year

Our son turned 11 months while we were visiting my parents in Florida last year. We brought some water wing type things with us, but ended up buying him a really cute turle float at Walmart in Florida. It was so cute, they had a few different animals and all of them had a little canopy cover that is removable. He LOVED IT! It has a little area in front of him that you can put a little water in and a couple of boats or toys too. I think we'll be able to use it again next month when we visit. It was great & less expensive than I anticipated. Maybe we'll try the wings this year too - he just isn't too thrilled with anything tight on his arms.

I HAVE TWO GIRLS 16 & 6. WHEN MY FIRST WAS LITTLE WE LIVED BY AN INGROUND POOL. THE PEOPLE WHO OWNED THE PROPERTY DIDN'T WANT HER IN THE YARD WITHOUT A FLOATATION DEVICE. OVER THE YEARS FOUND USING A LIFE VEST WAS BEST. IT'S A LITTLE WARMER THEN SWIMMIES BUT IT CAN'T DEFLAT.aLSO SOME OF THE ONES THAT ARE SWIM SUIT WITH FLOATION DEVISES IN IT THEY MAY BE ABLE TO FLIP AND LAND WITH THEIR HEADS UNDERWATER BUT NOT BE ABLE TO GET BACK OVER. WE ALMOST LOST MY FIRST WHEN SHE WAS 3 BECAUSE I TURNED FOR ONE SECOND AND SHE DECIDED SINCE SHE TOOK SWIM LESSONS SHE COULD GO INTO THE BIG POOL TO GET A TOY. SINCE NEITHER OF MY CHILDREN WERE ALLOWED IN A YARD WITH ANY TYPE OF POOL WITHOUT A VEST. YOU CAN GET THEM AT ANY BOAT STORE OR ANY PLACE LIKE TARGET, WALMART, ETC. IF THEY HAVE SWIM STUFF OUT THE ARE USUALLY UNDER $20.00. IT IS WELL WORTH IT ESPECIALLY IF THEY ARE MOBILE.

My children are raised around a pool and we are faithful with the saftey first products. For that age we use one that was like a swimsuit with an intertube built into it. Look online under saftey first swim wear. Good luck
