Suggestions for Wetting Through Pull up at Night Time

My 3 yr old has been potty trained for about 7-8 months now. For the 1st 4 months he needed no pull up at night but then all of a sudden he started wetting the bed. At first it was only once or twice a week and then after a couple weeks of changing sheets in the middle of the night, we started putting pull ups on at night. That is completely fine but since we have started doing this, now he pees in his pull up (fills it up) every single night. A lot of nights they leak and I end up having to change the sheets anyways!!! Any suggestions on what he can wear that won't leak?? Right now I just go in there around 11:30 and put a new pull up on while he is sleeping but I am over that and want to just find something that works all night long!!!

We had this happen as well...went to a larger size and no liquids after dinner. One good ptty trip before bed and we've been free and clear of any problems like this since.

Hi J.

I had to use overnight diapers for my son for that same reason. The pull-ups aren't designed to hold enough.

Good luck!

My son isn't completely potty trained but was also peeing thru his pull-ups so we used the nighttime ones and even started going through those. I started using the Huggies Nighttime diapers. They are a little more absorbent than the pull-ups. Only 1 accident since we switched a couple months ago. Hope this helps.

I had a similar problem with my son. I had him trained by 3 then 2 years later he started wetting the bed every night suddenly about the time I found out that a good friend of his was doing the same thing and they found out that he was diabetic. My son, thankfully wasn't diabetic like his friend but we went throught pull ups every night as well.

Now I know your son is very young, but when my son was in third grade we had him tested for ADHD per request from the teacher and the school. And indeed we found out that he was ADHD. As soon as we started the medication, he instantly stopped wetting the bed and we haven't had a problem since.

I read many things about bed wetting before we found out what was wrong, talked to the pediatritian, talked to other girlfriends with similar problems, etc. and by the time our son stopped he was 9 years old. My son was very upset as well and tried very hard to stop, but making him feel bad about it was very hard to not do but the best thing for the child.

The Pediatrician told me that sometimes they just can't help it. Sometimes it is just a bladder maturing thing. But, if you had him trained for a period of time like I did, it just doesn't seem like it's a bladder maturation problem. I'm no doctor but, at least with my experience, I know there are other things that could contribute to the problem. But, since he is sooo very young and with a new sibling, he might have just regressed a little and will respond to potty training again soon. Maybe a little time is all he needs. Good luck!

Hi J.! I have a few suggestions for you. Try limiting your sons drinks after a certain time. Limit giving your son anything big to drink an hour and a half - two hours before he goes to bed. If he becomes thirsty and wants a sip of something then give him that. That way, he will have plenty of time to eliminate alot of the fluid before he goes to bed.

I have had great success doing this with my daughter (who is 2 1/2), and most mornings she wakes up dry. I am also a big fan of Pampers Pull-Ups. They seem to work really good. Good Luck!

We had the same problem with my oldest who now thankfully (at 10) has been dry for quite a few months. Use the largest Goodnights pullup that you can without major gaping and that should help a lot. At one point I even wanted to go to something more absorbent and wondered if the adult sizes were any more absorbent, but I never was able to come up with a conclusive answer. Limiting drinks after dinner (encourage him to drink a lot earlier in the day so you don't feel so bad denying him late night drinks) and enforce going potty and "getting it all out" last thing before going to bed too.

What I found that worked for me with my kids with peeing through the night is
1. Less drinks for them as it got closer to bedtime
and
2.Just before I went to bed I would pick them up out of their bed and take them to the bathroom and talk softly to them to get them to go pee.

That worked well for me.

They have special night time ones, I think they are called good nights but not sure. Also cut out the water a little sooner in the evening so he won't have as much to pee out.

Hi J.,
I am the mother of 5 boys, and 1 girl. My youngest is now 5. Potty training is different for each child, but my first recommendation would be to make sure he is using the bathroom before bed each night, and at 11:30 when you would normally change his pull up, try getting him up to use the bathroom. This will get him in the habbit of getting up out of bed to use the bathroom when he has to go. Be consistant. It can be frustrating, I know. Also, some boys wet the bed when they are in a growth spurt. A sinus cold can also trigger bedwetting. Hope this helps!

Is he reacting to you giving attention to the baby? Also, try not to give the child anything to drink after 5:00 or 6:00.

Good luck

Are you putting the night time pull ups on him? And make sure they are big enough...

If you want to get away from the pull-ups, try double sheeting his bed. Plastic Cover then Sheet, then plastic cover then a sheet. So if he has an accident, you just have to take the top layers off and then you have new, quick and easy.

My son was having problems at night staying dry also, so my husband every night before we would go to bed would get our son up and take him to the potty and have him go and then back to bed, and soon no more accidents.

Good Luck!

I have a much older son with eneureis (bed wetting). There are two things you may want to do: 1. change the size of the pull up. If your son is 3 yrs. old, try a size for 4 or even 5 yrs. Regular Pull ups are designed to be worn during the day and therefore can not hold an entire night. Buy those specifficaly done for night time. Also you may want to buy a matress cover with plastic top. When the accidents are rare, the matress won't suffer, but if it becomes a daily problem not even the best sheets will protect it. And finally remember not to blame the child, from personal experience I can tell you: It is not his fault...nor yours!

huggies overnight diapers are super absorbant.

I thnk they only make size 3 4 5 so your son might be too big.

but they really work.

Goodnights are made for older kids and hold more liquid. Pampers came out with something similar recently, one of the other responses mentioned them. My daughter has had better luck with the Goodnights but we have used the Pampers brand ones in a pinch.
Good Luck!

We were having that issue with our son before potty training and now he has moved to underwear and has actually been staying dry at night (so far anyway). Our trick? Our son HATES going to bed and he gets up about 5 times between the time we lay him down at 8:30 and whenever he falls asleep (about 9:30) to go potty. I think if you son goes to bed a lot easier, try getting him up to pee before you go to bed.... another option is to put one of the potty chairs in his room as a reminder while he is drifting off to get up if he needs to. Good luck!

How weird! We went through the same thing last week! After much discussion with other moms, I tried moving my daughter to the next size Pull Up. She was wearing the 2T/3T size, but after a week of peeing the bed I moved her up to the size 4T/5T and I MAKE her go before bed and make sure to limit beverages after 6:30pm (with an 8pm bedtime). So far, we haven't had any more incidents. Also, my husband and I keep reinforcing that if she has to go during the night, please call us and we will take her to the potty and then she can go back to bed. So far it's worked!
Good luck!

Hi there J.. I know how you feel, it is a tough situation. My son is almost 11 and still has to wear something to bed---not to worry you that it's gonna last this long, every chil is different. Just make sure he knows it's not his fault, also, do you cut off his drinking at least 2 hrs before bedtime? Sometimes that helps. Well I don't know if your son is big enough to try the GoodNights, that's what we use. They also have UnderJams and I think those run a little smaller than the GoodNights. I know they have Overnight diapers but I don't think you want to go back to putting a diaper on him, it might make him feel like a baby. I would check into the other two I mentioned, they are made to last through the night and work quite well. Good Luck! Feel free to contact me if you need anymore support from someone who knows what you are going through! J.

I don't like to restrict liquids, even though I do somewhat toward evening. My 2 year old wets through is diaper almost every night. A few things help...using Huggies in the red package...they seem to hold more, but I have also resorted to putting a maximum absorbancy maxi pad in his diaper toward the front. It mostly worked. Also, I notice my 4 year old wets more right after growth spurts, and sometimes wets the bed. Also, I make the bed with a mattress pad then a fitted sheet, then a vinyl mattress cover and another fitted sheet. That way, if he does wet the bed, I can strip the first sheet and vinyl cover off and still have an intact sleeping surface underneath. I guess he 'could' wet that layer too but it hasn't happened yet!

I use the night time huggies diapers and recently tried the night time huggies pull ups (with the same success)....they seemed to cure our issues (with the occasional time that he manages to fill those up). I'd really consider giving them a try. Also, I'd try to limit the amount of drinks he has after dinner and encourage him to use the bathroom before heading to bed.

I purchased the overnight diapers/pull ups from Huggies. They worked well and also One Step Ahead (a catalog) sell a cover that goes over the bed at about the spot his bottom would be. It holds like 4 cups...or so. We call it a pee-pee pad at our house. If he leaks you can remove and wash that, but the sheets stay dry, so no stripping the bed in the middle of the night. Hope this helps.
