Suggestions for a Moms' Weekend Out

Salado! Lots of great shops. I've never stayed at the Stagecoach Inn, but we did stay in a condo at Mill Creek Inn for a weekend. Nothing fancy, but comfortable.

Two places come to mind.... Canton.. which is East of Dallas and about 2 hour drive. But, plan it on the first weekend of the month. They have all those trade fair outdoorsy shops. Some are inside to beat the heat, but it is definitely an experience if you want to do some shopping. My husband and I ended up staying at a bed and breakfast for a night. But the weekend we went, the inside of the b&b was full and the couple offered their large RV. At first I thought that was weird...but we really enjoyed it and the privacy. They offered breakfast in the main house, but the RV was parked under an awning and it was right next to the big house out in the country. We loved the privacy and it was fully loaded. Very different.. it had a living room area, kitchen and large bedroom...
The 2nd place I recommend if you love to antique shop and love to stay at a B&B...is Jefferson. It is a neat town. My husband and I have been there at least 3 times and stayed at a couple of different B&B's in town. Lots of shopping... This is also East Texas.

It is in Comfort and it is West of SA. We rented out the whole B&B for our wedding, it was delightful. You will be @ 25 minutes from Kerrville, Fredricksburg, and Boerne down in the Hill Country. A wonderful escape with lots of small town appeal to enjoy closeby and you feel like you have really gotten out of the rat race. The drive is about 5.5 hrs...but if you go the backroad down thorugh Johnson City, to Fredricksburg you pass a bunch of wineries and it is a VERY peaceful drive without the hassel of 35. If you want more information, let me know. The B&B rooms are VERY reasonable, an undiscovered gem!!

Salado is a great place to stay and shop. It is between Waco and Austin off of 35. We also stayed at Trickle Creek Lodge in Glen Rose one year and loved it. Fredricksburg is a little further away but is so much fun as well. Have a great time wherever you end up going!

Thank you for your question. Lots of wonderful answers. I've been to Marshall. Okay place. I've been to Malakoff - some antique shopping. But try Lake Whitney. Antique shopping, Hillsboro outlet mall is there.

My girlfriends and I went to the Grand Hotel in McKinney. The hotel is beautiful, and not very expensive. We had an awesome time, and it allowed the one mom who couldn't spend the night (still breastfeeding) to join us for dinner, and then shopping the next day.

Canton is antique & unique shopping heaven! About an hour and a half from dowtown Dallas. Also in that area, the intersection of 69 & 80 is a town called Mineola - the cutest, quaintest little place. Antique shops galore, scrumptious restaurants, coffee & smoothie shops, bistro's AND the best rated 9-hole golf course in the state of Texas! My husband and I loved the town so much we bought a cabin on the town's lake - Lake Holbrook. This place is the best kept secret in the region!

Another suggestion that I didn't see from the other writers is Fredricksburg, TX (and more well-known than Mineola). It's a quaint historical town with more "upscale antiques", restaurants, bed & breakfasts, etc. My husband and I spent a wonderful Valentine's weekend there when I was too pregnant to venture too far from Dallas.

Austin is one of my favorite nearby get-away cities. Great B&Bs, spas, shopping (clothing, jewelry & art) and fun activities such as the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, boat rentals on Town Lake and bat-watching on Congress Street bridge at dusk. It's a 3 hour drive to a wonderful Hill Country city. Whatever you choose, have a great time!

We have 2 beautiful cabins in the Broken Bow Lake area of SE Oklahoma. It is about a 3 hour drive and well worth it. My girlfriends and I go up there twice a year for an awesome weekend of R&R. Granbury has great bed and breakfast and good shopping on the square, plus a couple of music shows in the evenings. Fredericksburg is a little further (maybe 5 hours) but lots to do - tons of shopping, winery tours, wildflower farm, lbj ranch, etc. Austin is also fun. My friends and I were going to do a spa weekend at Lost Pines before everyone got pregnant! Jefferson is also good for b&bs and shopping, but not as good as granbury and fredericksburg. Also, Little Rock, AR has a great inn (lookout point lakeside inn) and good shopping or stay at the Arlington hotel, an old hotel with a spa. Have fun!

I second the Granbury suggestion. If you like antiques, this is the place to go! The downtown square is full of small shops and hometown resturants. There are tons of Bed & Breakfast around the area plus there is an old fashioned hotel right on the square called "The Nutt House" with a restaurant downstairs (http://www.nutt-hotel.com). The square also has an Opera House with fun shows, etc. (http://www.granburyoperahouse.net) and it's only 2 hours from the Plano area. (I'm from there so I'm a little biased!) ha! Have fun where ever you go!

What about Grapevine? wineries, spas, good shopping? Sounds like a winner to me. Have fun!

Good Morning, Marshall is a great little town in East Texas (about 3 hours from Plano) with several B&B's, and lots of antiquing. It is very quiet on entertainment but there are some local venues. D. H.

Wimberly or Fredericksburg would be perfect. They have some nice B&Bs.
