I am wondering if any of you mommies out there have suggestions and recipes for my son's 1st birthday cake. I would like to do a low sugar birthday cake. He already has a sweet tooth. He loves ice cream, yogurt and stuff like that so I don't want to introduce him to chocolate and really yummy sweet cakes just yet. Any suggestions and recipes or places to buy??? the party is next week Saturday the 16th. Thank you!!!

What can I do next?

I second the suggestion for Mani's bakery. They do great baked goods with no refined sugar. The Chocolate Fortress cake is our big splurge every year for her birthday. It's so delicious and I feel so much better about it for all the kids.

Carrot cake or any muffin-type cake, like blueberry or cranberry with a bit of confection sugar sounds yummy!

Hi N. -

Try Mani's Bakery. There are a few around -- one in Santa Monica on Main Street & another on Fairfax near 6th, I think. I love Mani's.

My daughter's 1st b-day cake was a very small Mani's carrot cake, quite pretty. She didn't know what to make of it and ate very little. She didn't dislike it; just had never been offered something like it before (I was strict but have softened since then). The rest of guests had Costco's carrot cake. Mani's is pricey, but worth it for the guest of honor!

There are other health conscious bakeries around, but I don't know their names. If you've had Mani's and don't like it, feel free to contact me. I can ask my friend who always gets "clean" cakes for her kids' parties what the name of her bakery is.

Happy birthday to your son -- and don't forget to give his big brother the golden retriever an extra bikkie on the special day!

I wanted the same thing for my baby girl's first birthday on the same day! I bought a mix out of a box which is "gluten free"" and low in sugar from Whole Foods. It doesn't have refined sugar in it but it does have cane sugar but that is natural and not as bad for you.
