My soon to be 9 year old wants to have a scavenger hunt bithday party at the mall. Any suggestions on how to go about doing this? I was going to write up clues which would lead them to various store around the mall that will ultimately lead them to the food court for pizza and cake. I was going to give them disposal cameras to take pics of the stores after they've figured out the clue, but the mall won't let me do that. Any suggestions are welcome! BTW...she's a winter birthday, so outside is out of the question. ***Just to clear things up, the girls WOULD be supervised and not running around the mall w/out supervision!***

What can I do next?

Sorry S., but allowing 9 year olds to run around the mall without a supervising adult for each one is downright dangerous. I know your daughter wants to have fun on her birthday, but keep it in a private venue. You can have a scavenger hunt in your home. Have each of the kids hide something small in your house. Then have them each fold up a piece of loose-leaf paper into, say 16 pieces, and tear them in the pieces. They number each one in the corner and fold it and number it on the outside with their name on each one. They then instruct the person who's going to read it to the next paper, and then the next and then the last paper will take them in the vicinity of what they've hidden. The person who finds the prize, wins. It's fun for the kids to place all the papers and then when they're all placed (they all have the name and number on the ouside), then you count to three and they all start running looking for the clues in consecutive order. The winner has to have all the clues in order to be the winner. Hope this helps - good luck.

i think you should continue to take him out as long as he is totally bundled...the fresh air is great for him. but if its bitter cold i wouldnt go....dont worry about what other moms think! its none of their business

Scavenger hunts are great....but i dont think you could take pictures in malls. I know when I was a teen we had a scavenger hunt and were taking pictures and the police stopped us. I think an outdoor scavenger hunt would be better. KIds dont mind the cold so much as long as they are running around and having a good time.

Depending on where your from, if theres a "limited too" store in the mall, most girls that age LOVE that store. My neice just turned ten and wanted to go there. They'll do a party and make up. Her mother gave each girl (there were like 8 or 9) like $10 & let them each pick something. Then they went to the movies & the food court. Talk to the mall office & see what they WILL let you do. They may have some advice as well. And talk to some of the stores. They might let you do the scavenger hunt...modified. A cashier or associate might be willing to help the kids find certain items an maybe a clue to the next item or store, or something of that nature. You'd have to get the ok from the store manager, but chances are if you BUY something...they'll be willing to help. Most of them are nice. You wouldn't be able to do the camera thing (for security reasons), but I'm sure they can work with you on SOMETHING. Good luck!

Hi S.,

I think a good idea for the hunt would be to maybe get business cards from certain stores, maybe a sample of some kind from a candy/cookie store, to go menus from indoor restraunts, maybe a price tag or some sort from other stores, etc. I think it depends on the kind of stores you have in your mall. I would call your mall and inquire about kind of party. I do understand the no photo thing. I would set up with one store to lead them back to the food court for pizza and cake. Most places will be more than happy to help, I am sure. Hope this helps.

For a different suggestion - for my daughter's 9th birthday (she's now 16) I took her and some of her friends to the local haircutting school (where the new hairstylists learn to cut and style hair) and they did up their hair and nails (no one had their hair cut - only styled) - it was like $10/per kid. We then went for pizza and ice cream.

A movie party is always fun as well - then some shopping in the mall afterwards!!

Good luck and HAPPY BIRTHDAY to your daughter!
