I have a two year old who at about 18 months old started getting constipated about every two weeks or so. She will poop little really stinky pellet hard poops about every 20 minute or so when constipated. We have tried apple sauce, high fiber food, prunes, and juices. The doc put her on miralax and I am not sure what to think.

What can I do next?

Give her the miralax!!!! And cut down on the milk. My son is now 6 but he would only go poop on Sundays. It was not good. He would always clog the toilet. One Sunday he was so constipated that it blocked his bladder and he was in severe pain. He couldn't go to the bathroom at all! We had to rush him to the ER, it was so serious they took him immediately. Anyway, we got him unclogged and had to give him exlax and miralax to clean him out for the next few months. He now goes every day or every other. It was the most horrible, expensive poop that I have ever experienced. I don't want anyone to have to go through that!

You could give her probiotics. Open a capsule into her cereal every morning. You can get them at Walmart or any other store. Google "Benefits of probiotics"

My daughter just turned 7 and has suffered from chronic constipation since she first began solids as an infant. She was checked for everthing, and they have never found anything medically wrong with her. The doc put her on Miralax. Although it helped, it still did not make her regular. After being on it for 5 years I finally took her off of it.

When she was 5 I began taking her in for accupuncture. It is 100% effective. The doctor has also given her herbs to take to help her. She had no problems until she started school and was not allowed to take herbs at school. So we do still have issues again now, since she cannot take the herbs regularly.

I know that a lot of it is now behavior ridden. Once they start to have painful movements they hold it in only comounding the issue. The sooner you get the issue resolved the more likely it will not become behavioral for your child.

Best of luck to you!

By the way, we are vegetarians. She eats hig fiber foods regularly and takes probiotics daily.

My little boy has lots of GI problems, and we had to give him mirilax. I understand your reservation of giving her a laxative, but miralax is awesome! It doesnt work too quickly that it will give her cramping and excess gas, but it also works quick enough to give her the relief that she needs, and you can mix it in just about anything!

Here is another suggestion that we got from my son's GI specialist and his nutritionist. Give her 4oz of V8 Fusion everyday. Do not do the V8 splash becuase that is a lot more sugar and fillers, the fusion will give her a lot more fiber and more vitamins becuase it is all fruits and veggie juice. My son is autistic, and that is what they recomended to get him to eat vegies becuase it is all of the fruit/veggie requirements that they need on a daily basis. It has really helped us get him regulated, and more healthy too! It took us a few weekes to figure out how much he needed and how much was too much. (I didnt think that too much veggie could be bad, but too much gave him really bad diarhia)

Good luck with her and I hope your little girl starts to feel better soon!

My five year old has had these problems sinse birth. You are doing good with diet but my daughter, due to consipation, now has a swollen colon and has trouble still. Also I suggest (if you are not already doing this), watch her cheese and banana intake. Limit theses items. My daughter doc has her a Maralax daily. It really helps. I understand the hesitation but all the other stuff give too much gas or does not work at all. Like I said she is 5 now and will not potty train because it hurts when she potties. Do not let this go if it consist. It can turn into a real bad problem.

We had the same problem and were prescribed the same stuff. It does work but it will take a little experimenting on your part to find the right dosage. When we started it worked so well she had diarrhea. So I backed off on the dosage until we had regulated her bm and she wasn't straining to go. My doc told me it had something to do with change in diet and that's why she was having the problem. Some kids do fine and others take a bit to adjust. At the time, we were changing from baby food to table food. We didn't have to use it forever either. Her system gradually adjusted and we were able to take her off. My doc also told me the med would give her time to forget there was pain involved and she would go easier after a while. All these things were true and we were able to take her off after a year.
