This is for all you mommy's out there that have given me helpful suggestions and advice, and for those of you that are in the same boat as me...

My son is taking milk from a cup!!! He will drink it from a real glass with a straw as I hold it for him. Ideal, no, but it's a start!
He has been breastfed since birth and is now 14 months, and has never taken a bottle, and until now has only taken water from a sippy. I am finally confident enough to start weaning him :)

I am so proud of my big boy!!!!!!!!

What can I do next?

Awesome!

I know you will get a lot of people beating you up for weaning him, but do not despair, or pay attention to them, you are doing what you need to do..

I was the same way.. and naysayers have no idea what it feels like to not be able to breast feed, not to be able to continue to breast feed or the stress they put on us mommas just trying to do our best... They are just bullies....

They need to Mind their own Business..

Hi Sara
Congrats for feeding him for 14mths and best of luck with the weaning.
You go Mama and please don't pay any attention to comments that you should stay breastfeeding.
Your choice Mama.
My only advise would be to be ready for weaning, hotcloths on engrossed breasts, pain relief fo mild fever. This happened to me when weaning but lasted only for a few days.
Good luck

when you're sick of holding it for him -if he doesn't learn soon- give him chocolate or strawberry flavored milk (just this once) help him to taste it and then walk away

Just curious... why does your son have to be weaning to make you proud of your big boy? If he's still nursing - which is best for him and healthier for you too - he will still be your 'big boy'. If breastfeeding is going well... why wean? The antibodies and immune & development proteins he's getting from breastmilk cannot be duplicated with cow's breastmilk and vitamin supplements.

Just asking....

***For those who commented on my post***

I was a hard working single Mother, either working 2 jobs and or going to school full time and working for the first 5 years of her life. I was still able to breastfeed my child for as long as she wanted, as well as give her regular foods and watered down juice. No cow's breastmilk in our house unless it is needed for cereal or a recipe. I know how hard being a Mother is - probably more than many of you posting here. I recently married 11/20/2010 - after my daughter's 5th birthday. I am now an LPN, and am proud to have allowed my child to decide when she was ready to wean.
