I second the Neti pot. It feels gross the first time you use it, but now I use it every day to keep my sinuses clear (and I'm not pregnant!) I swear by it.

Try a Nettie Pot .... just make sure you use distilled water OR you boil the water prior to use. Cleans the sinus' right out!

Hi Sam,
The best thing to do is to call your OB for a list of what you can take while you are pregnant. There ARE medications that are OK...I was as sick as a dog right before I delivered and I remember getting such a list from my doc.
Feel better soon!

Hi,
I had the same problem for couple of days with cough.
I asked my OB/Gyn Doctor, she said I can use Robitussin (cough, chest congestion) and nasal spray (salt solution)
Ask your doctor, there are some medicines you can use if you really feel uncomfortable.

good luck

All medicine crossed the placenta. I would just steam yourself over a pot of hot salted water with a towel as a hood. Also, stay well hydrated. Good luck

Yep I would call your provider's office for a list of approved meds. Just went through this myself last week, after a month of being sick and my daughter coming down with pneumonia I decided to go ahead and take something medicinal. Ended up with antibiotics and robitussin dm. And just yesterday I bought a NeilMed Sinus Rinse which I swear has worked wonders for my congestion. I try to go all natural whenever possible, especially when there's a baby involved (I'm 6 months along) but my daughters pneumonia diagnosis put a scare in me. Talk with your OB, midwife, even get backup verification from a trusted pharmacist. Hope you feel better soon.

I would only ask a pharmacist, not a Walmart one either. One that works in a smaller long term business. A real pharmacy. They are going to have a much smaller base of patients they work with and more likely to be familiar with the new drug interactions. I might even ask a couple of them to compare advice.

I take Children's Liquid Sudafed that I get at a family Pharmacy in my town. This type of pharmacy is the only kind that will get it for me. The others argue that it isn't even made anymore...They don't know everything. But I do trust a pharmacist from a smaller home town style of pharmacy better.

Docs only know what their are told by the med company rep's when it comes to meds. They don't know much either.

I was so sick over Thanksgiving at my family's in Mississippi (from Texas) that my husband and cousin took it upon themselves to research what I could take and actually go out and get it for me. I can't imagine how bad I looked for them to do that...

After their research, they basically came back with the information that I could take a lot of things. The biggest no-no, though, was anything labeled "multi-symptom".

However, I was running fever, getting chills, couldn't breath, throat hurt - bad, bad cold. I put off taking something as long as possible. It was my fourth cold of my pregnancy and I was only about 3.5-4 months in. I had been able to avoid taking anything prior to that point.

If it's just a stuffed up nose (which I KNOW can be soooo frustrating), I would probably just try to ride it out. In fact, you could be stuffed up your entire pregnancy due to swelling in your sinuses without having a cold or anything else. Then the medicine wouldn't work anyway.

Saline nasal spray in the first trimester. After the first trimester, you can use Mucinex. If it is allergy related, most physicians will OK an allergy nasal spray after the first trimester.

Both times I have been pregnant, my OB told me its OK to take Mucinex as it does not cross the placental plain (or something like that?)
