Struggling with Nursing and Changing My 11 Month Old

Hi Ladies,
I need some help. My son is getting very hard to nurse. He loves to kick me with his legs, play with my face and laughs at me when I try to hold his legs down and out of the way. I am committed to continuing to nurse him, but I need to know what others have done to help control a fidgety little boy.

He's also been HORRIBLE with diaper changes too- twisting, turning and trying to roll over and sit up. Giving him something to play with during the change is no longer working and I am getting frustrated! HELP! Does this just eventually go away? What can I do?

Thank you!!!!

T.

Hi T.!
Its probably a phase. I recently stopped nursing (19 months!) and I seem to remember around 11 or 12 months, we had the same issues with being silly during nursing and changing.

What I did was when he was screwing around is to tell him to stop kicking or fidgeting and then if he didn't, I stopped nursing him and set him on the floor. He eventually realized that nursing time was not play time and he stopped.

With changing, I think I just incorporated songs and goofy faces to keep him focused on me and not trying to wiggle too much.

I know its a trying time, but "this too shall pass." If you can make it through this "phase" you will be much happier!!

I hope this helps!

I can relate to the squirminess during diaper changes! I find that keeping my daughter (16 mos) occupied whether with a small toy, songs, talking about our day, etc seems to help. I also constantly ask her to point out different body parts...head, toes, eyes, feet, etc. Usually I am done with the diaper change as we get to the last few body parts!

Awwwe. Hehe. Sorry it just makes me laugh because I am going through the exact same thing with my 10 1/2 month old boy. He'll frequently stop nursing just to poke me in the nose or grab my mouth really hard.

I have noticed he is much better once my milk lets down so I try to relax and consentrate on him. It also helps to have as few distractions as possible. Also, if I nurse him before he eats he is more interested in nursing because he is still hungry.

I also have the same diaper changing problem. I'll be interested to hear your responses.

My son is 7 1/2 mos. and is doing the same exact thing. If you get any good tips, please let me know.

Didn't have the nursing problem, but the squirmy wormy change, yes -- we'd sing the ABC song over and over and both my kids would be transfixed by it, and a little set of plastic keys also worked on my son but not my daughter. Good luck, it is just a phase, for both my kids it went away in about 3 weeks, all their phases seemed to only last a few weeks before moving on to new challenges. :)

My 17 month old is still hard to change. Although it is a little better than when he was your sons age. He also hates getting dressed in the morning and after bath.
He still nurses, but I've not really had any problems with him fidgeting during nursing--although he loves twiddling with the other breast--very annoying and I can't seem to break him of it.
