Stroller Battles (Or Perhaps Better Transitioning)

Mamas & Papas -

DS (19 months) throws a right fit when its time to get into the stroller. He wriggles, gets rigid, gets wormy, screams and cries if I try to get him seated. Once strapped though, he is fine, and resigns himself to it quite nicely. I can see his perspective on things. He's been pushing the stroller and enjoying himself. Little does he know that we are getting to the end of the park and he can't push the stroller along the sidewalks or the busy streets.

Any tips on how to make this less painful for both of us?

Thanks a bunch,
F. B.

When my kids didn't want to be in the stroller they could walk (even younger than 19 months.) Only rule was they had to hold my hand. He can help you push the stroller with his other hand.
If he refuses to hold your hand then back in the stroller he goes. On a busy street, them's the rules :)

I have this same issue sometimes, and I just put him in there and let him be mad. I talk to him along the way and let him know what's about to happen and give him a moment--where I can--to get used to the idea, if you will. He's good at appearing to be calm when I say, calmly and firmly, "HEY--stop that."

You should be able to tell him what's going to happen several moments before picking him up to strap him in. It may help.

Also, must he be in the stroller? Can you just take his hand instead, fold the stroller up and do things that way? Maybe once more around the park to see if he tires and is more willing to sit still?

Just a few ideas. I'm having stroller questions too, my daughter is 5 and we're planning on attending a LARGE convention this summer. Good luck to you.

My daughter started "giving up the stroller" at around 18-19 months. She used to be my jogging buddy and provided great resistance training. Now I get resistance training if she even sees the stroller!

So we just gave it up when she turned two. In transitioning I told her that she has to hold my hand or let me carry her in parking lots or she will have to go back to the stroller.

It's a little more exhausting having your little walker but sure beats the battle.

Good luck. He wants to be mobile!
