Stripping Cloth Diapers

Help! I use pocket diapers for my daughter and they're all repelling. I use diaper cream on her bum but I ALWAYS use a liner. I believe the issue started when I changed brands of liner because I never had an issue before. In the past I've used Dawn with good result but this time it's not working. I've washed and rinsed and rinsed and rinsed and rinsed (our water bill is going to be ridiculous) just to start the process over 2 more times. I even tried scrubbing each diaper individually with a scrub brush and Dawn but they're still repelling. I've read you can use Sensi-Clean but some babies are sensitive to it. Has anyone used it? Where do you buy it? Any other tips?

What can I do next?

Wash them in VERY hot water with just a cup of cheap white vinegar. This will remove the soap and softener residue and leave them static free and soft. Like the others have said stains aren't a big deal - they happen depending on what causes them.
Good luck

Hi C.,

I am having the same problem, so I am curious to see what others say, but other things I've heard to try (although no luck for me - I think my husband washed ours in Dreft too much which is NOT an approved detergent for our pocket diapers!) is to boil the diapers, as well as put one of those laundry balls in with them with some vinegar.

Good luck!

C.; well not sure what you mean by repelling, are they repelling the stuff that goes in there and nothing sticking to them ?or are they repellling as in dirty, if water and stuff ahem body fluids and stuff are not being held in it may be that you are using too much fabric softner, towels will repel water after using fabric softner too much, if they are repelling like in they are dirty and i cant clean them, i used cloth diapers but the flat ones, so it might of been easier, if these are not flat i would turn them inside out to wash, i first washed them in hot water with bleach like two cups, and soap, i always washed mine in dreft, then i would run through a second wash which would help remeove the bleach from them, and i would not use fabric softner, and they seemed to be clean, but diapers get dirty , and stained its ok, if you cant get them clean, buy new ones if you have to have things pristeen clean, but my cloth diapers always came out nice and white, there were a few that stains would not come out of, but that usually depends on what they ate certain foods would leave stronger stains, but most of them came out with bleach and a hot water wash, actually i think i did a rinse cycle first, to remove some soil , most of it was dumped in toilet first, then the hot bleach then a third time, its ok, do your best and be happy , dont fret over stains, if you dont want them stained , then its best to not use them, either way im sure you have a happy healthy child who adores your love and attention and knows your intentions are for her so take care and have a great day D. s

First...don't use soap...the goal of stripping a diaper is to get rid of the soap residue not add to it. Put your diapers in the washer and make sure your water heater is turned up all the way. Wash the diapers on HOT you might want to add a couple of pot fulls of boiling water if your water heater isn't hot enough. peek in the washer and check for soap bubbles...keep running the diapers through the washer with very hot water until there are no more soap bubbles floating around.

You can boost the stripping with adding any of these other things to the wash instead of detergent or soap.

Vinegar (plain white vinegar)
Baking soda
Oxiclean.

The only tip I can give you is about diaper rash if your daughter has it from the cloth diapers or disposable.
Use Bag Balm. It is the best thing for diaper rash that there is as far as I am concerned. It cleared my daughter's rash up in 2 days. It is for cow's,but drug stores sell it too. It is good for other uses also.

I'm pretty sure your not suppose to use rash cream, even if you use liners....
Do you wash with bleach once or twice a month? I also know people that have boiled their diapers... I have never done it, but I hear it is good for stripping. Good luck.
