Hi,
Just looking for advice or maybe something to ease my sanity right now. My 3 yo went to the doctor a week ago yesterday dx of strep. Started oral amoxicillin. Now, we have been battling strep since April I got it, may he got it, June I got it, July he gets it again. He was doing well on oral meds then after 6 days on them he has a fever again and throws up c/o sore throat. Has fever during the night. I take him back to doc yesterday with only a slight fever that morning. They test for strep again says it's negative, but he has been on his meds. Says his throat looks sore. Gives him a shot of penicillin hoping to knock the strep out. He doesn't have a fever the rest of the evening. Next day fever, vomiting, diarrhea start again. I don't know if we are dealing with a virus plus strep or if this is just something worse?! No one at school has had a stomach virus or that we know of at least. Any advice would be good. We are going crazy.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the responses. We might have to go to ENT Monday if not cleared up. I have washed everything a million times, tons of Lysol, a professional cleaner, toothbrushes are changed 2 days after starting antibiotics, sheets are washed. Car seat disinfected. He does have an ent he has had adenoid removed and tubes put in, so we can call them Monday. He is still throwing up today but no fever. We do probiotics as much as he can keep down. He usually throws up when he has strep which is why this is confusing, is it the strep or a virus too? So frustrating I want my happy healthy boy back. Thanks everyone.

Go to www.drugs.com and look up Amoxicillin side effects. The drug also can cause fever, sore throat, vomiting and diarrhea, just to name a few. The list is huge. If he has had several rounds of antibiotics, he can also develop thrush, (yeast in mouth, throat, g-I tract). It is possible he has adverse sensitivity to this class of meds, however the "cillin's" are usually prescribed for strep infections.

Sometimes the most well intentioned don't work and he may need some other form of medication.

Hope you get right treatment soon!

Diarrhea and vomiting can be symptoms of strep. My daughter just had strep. No sore throat but really bad belly pain and diarrhea.

Definitely get pets checked for strep if you have them. Cats especially. I got strep twice in a row. Once the cat was treated I stopped getting it.

Do you have any pets?
Sometimes pets are carriers and people and their pets can pass it back and forth.
If that's the case then you need the vet treating the pets same time as your doctor is treating you.

Bless your child's heart. He can't catch a break.

Are you seeing a pediatric ENT? If you aren't, you should. Removing his tonsils might really help.

I don't have other advice, I'm sorry to say.

my friends family had recurring strep.. passed from person to person.. eventually they all went to the ENT... all family members were cultured..and one kid.. who had no symptoms of strep tested positive for strep.. he was a carrier and kept reinfecting the household.. the kid wa put on antibiotics.. and problem was solved..

just an idea.. maybe a visit tot he ENT have everyone cultured... and see if someone is a carrier..

This stinks. I feel for you.

I have chronic sinus issues -- antibiotics for 6 sinus infections in 8 months. Long story short -- the antibiotics didn't work, I needed 14 days not 10. It just kept coming back. I also had sinus surgery.

Last I a lot of antibiotics can also mess up the bacteria in your gut and cause digestive and immune issues.

I'd say go to an ENT and get some yogurt. Also cut out sugar like juice and hard candy because that feeds the bacteria in your throat.

Our strep nor the kids I have watched in my years of child care had any of the symptoms you're describing with strep.

Now my kiddo was in the hospital for a week with strep a few years ago. Her throat swelled so much it almost closed. She didn't really run a high fever with it either. No other symptoms.

Her strep was viral and taking antibiotics would have done nothing. They gave her IV antibiotics anyway though to prevent her getting some side issue going.

They tested her for Mono 3 different times in 2 different places just to make sure the lab didn't have something wrong. The doc said he'd never seen anything like her case that wasn't Mono. He was dumbfounded.

Strep is one of those really debilitating illnesses. It sucks the energy and life right out of you.

Go to an ENT or ORL doc please. They are specialist in the eyes, ears, noses, and throats. They may have much better education in treating this particular strain of strep.

Are you changing out toothbrushes each time you get on antibiotics? If not, you can just keep reinfecting yourselves.

Hi T.,

All these meds may work on symptoms but they are weakening the immune system so when you are exposed, you go down again. If you don't want to stop the meds at least add some immune boosters...no one in my house gets sick anymore, not because were not exposed but, because our bodies are strong enough to fight it off. Beta Glucan is my first choice because its pretty high powered and knocks most things out within an hour....with no side effects. Elderberry is what I use on the littler ones..

Hope this helps!

I agree with trying a pediatric ENT but also you should ask the regular pediatrician if vomiting and diarrhea is normal with strep. It very well may be as others note.

Since you and he are passing the strep back and forth and now you also have vomit and diarrhea in the house -- Be sure to change toothbrushes (someone mentioned this -- we do it when anyone's sick and throw out the "sick brush" after a couple of days and replace it -- it does help). But also be sure that you get a ton of Clorox wipes and disposable gloves, and that every doorknob, countertop and sink is constantly wiped down all day long. Keep wiping the liquid soap dispenser down, especially the pump top, if you use one. The spigot handles of the sink. The floors and especially clean the toilet including the flush handle, daily at least. I've found that a pretty serious attack on all surfaces, handles, spigots etc. helps. So does changing bedsheets (especially pillowcases and even pillows themselves) helps. I know it sounds excessive but for us, a cleaning blitz maybe twice a day when someone has something communicable seems to help a lot and we don't pass things among ourselves.
