Hi everyone,

As a disclaimer this question is about me, not my son, but I have a feeling he is going to catch it too so I'd like to be prepared. I have had a high fever (103-104) for 6 days. I also have had a severe sore throat and ear pain in both ears. On the third day I went to the doctor and the strep test was positive. He put me on the 5 day z-pack. Three days later there was no improvement. I was actually worse so I went back to the doctor and put me on clindamycin and said I also had a double ear infection. It's two days later and I still have all the symptoms. My ears are killing me, I have really bad dry mouth and my fever was just 104.6. I don't understand why I am not getting better. Does anyone have any experience to share or advice to give? Thanks in advance!

So What Happened?

Thanks ladies! I'm calling my Dr as soon as the office opens! I had my tonsils out when I was 5 because I got strep so often. I still get it once a year at least, but it has never been this bad. I usually feel better the next day after starting antibiotics. Hopefully my Dr will have a plan. I'm taking ibprofen for the fever but as soon as it wears off the fever shoots right back up. Tired of being sick! My son is two so it is hard with him around but my husband has been helping and my mom has been coming over too thankfully. Thanks for all the advice ladies!

Strep is a tricky one. It can be a virus and not respond to antibiotics at all. When my granddaughter had it she was in the hospital for a week on IV Rocefrin (sp). It's one of the strongest antibiotics out there and it's really good.

It didn't touch it. Because it was viral and not bacterial.

Her throat swelled nearly shut and she couldn't swallow. In the hospital they gave her a Mr. Thirsty suction tube and she sucked the pus and saliva out with it.

BTW, a Z-Pack does absolutely nothing for me. I get a prescription for it, take it all, then go back worse off and get something like K-Flex.

For the ear infections and probably sinus infection that will follow I suggest you ask the doc for a med that works for you, one that you've had good results with, to treat those areas. The strep will work it's way out on it's on good time.

Are you frequently ill? Do you usually have trouble getting over things? If so, perhaps your immune system is really weak and could use bolstering. There are things you can do about that but it takes time and it won't help your immediate situation. I used to have a lot of problems with illnesses particularly upper respiratory/throat/bronchial issues, including tonsils and ear problems.

My other guess is that you have a really resistant form of strep - we hear so much about drug-resistant strains due to the overuse of antibiotics and antibacterial agents (soaps, cleaners, etc.) so we've killed off the weaker strains and are left with the so-called "super bugs". I agree you should let your doctor know that just switching you from one oral antibiotic to another is not cutting it. Let them know you are tracking your fever and what the range is. I don't know if they'll say to let the current treatment run its course so you aren't switching again and again, or if they might actually want to do something like IV treatment. A lot of pills are not well absorbed and digested (both prescription and over the counter things like vitamins) so maybe you aren't getting the full benefit of what you are swallowing? I'd call today though so you can get some attention and answers before the weekend. Murphy's Law says that things will really take a turn for the worse when your doctor is off.

I'm sure it's very hard for you to get enough rest with a child at home, so I wonder if you can get more help so you really can just go to bed and increase fluids and do nothing else? Don't be afraid to have someone reach out on your behalf and get a small army of people in the house to help you so you do nothing but sleep and rest. Your body really needs more help than it's getting.

Good luck.

See your doctor again.
This stuff is getting more drug resistant.
(And I think the whole 'we're over using antibiotics' argument is nonsense when they don't include how much our meat industries uses - 4 5ths of all antibiotics produced is used in animal feed and THAT'S where the over use is really coming from).
Did you ever have your tonsils out?
If not, now might be the time to have it done.
Although the recovery for having them out as an adult is a lot harder than having them out as a kid.

Go back to your doctor...with a fever that high I'd even go to the ER.

Your son may not catch it either. I had strep twice in the last three years (actually it was twice in one year, but it was 2011-2012) and my kids didn't get it either time.

Oh my goodness, prayers are going out to you. I'm glad to read your calling your doctor again. Something is going on and it sounds a little worse than strep. Adults shouldn't have high fevers like that for so long. If the antibiotics aren't helping, I think something else is happening.
My daughter her sophomore year of high school was really sick like that. They told her it was strep too, she didn't have anything wrong with her ears. I went back and forth to the doctor, then ended up taking her to the emergency room where she became allergic to penicillin because they gave her too much of it in all the antibiotics, where her face swelled up and she couldn't breath. It was so scary. One of the doctors in the ER said she might also have mono, which I wish they would have tested her for it, but they said there isn't much to do because she was taking everything that she would if she had it too.
Doctor's can be wrong, so stress to your doctor that you know this is not normal to have a fever for this long and this high. Something is wrong with your body and you know it.

curious tho is may be viral - what "level" z-pack did you get?
the last few times I got a z-pack, noticed that instead of 500mg the darn thing was HALF of it -- not good, and if yours was similar, not enough to knock out a strong strep!

am also wondering if you are crossing from strep into it's more serious forms - I sure hope not

Wow I'm so sorry you are going through this!! Throat pain can be truly unbearable because it's almost impossible to get any relief. My only suggestion is to gargle with warm salt water several times a day. You can also try putting a warm compress on your neck. Have you tried those really strong throat lozenges that taste nasty but numb the throat? Hang in there!!!

If its strep, its bacteria. No way its viral. Streptococcus are bacteria. Anyway, I hope the dr has helped you by now.. I had strep two weeks ago.. and within two days had became an abcess in my throat.. wbc was really high, fever, ears hurt so bad. they put me on amoxicillan.. the penicillin family is best for killing the strep family.
